F-22 Arrives In Japan

Sun Feb 18, 2007 11:19 am

After that spot of trouble and having to stop over in Hawaii for a bit. (I'm sure the pilots didn't mind) the first two F-22's ever on a foreign deployment have touched down in Kadena Airbase, Okinawa, Japan.

Up to ten more are to follow shortly, and the current plan is to keep them there for three to four months.

Is this to show a bit of muscle to the Chinese/N.Koreans, or is this just a stunt to lure the Japanese Govt. into buying a few of these??

Or Both!!??  Wink

Its a scheduled AEF deployment. The software code had nothing to do with stopping in Hawaii nor did they "have to" return there, it was done for logistical reasons.

Niether I don't think.I was probably just their turn on the deployment schedule. If anything I think it was more for the US to do something with the F-22 that it hasn't done before. Just adding another feather in the cap of the program.

Operational evaluation; demonstration of the airplane's ability to deploy. Also a bit of flag flying I'm sure, a "look what we got and we can send it where we want to ..." kind of thing. This is normal when a new weapon comes on board and the desire is there to flaunt it a bit. Wouldn't surprise me to see it make a visit to South Korea, Australia, the Philippines and maybe even to Thailand. For the South Koreans it should be a morale booster, a further demonstration we have the necessary stuff to stand with them if the going gets tough.

I would be quite surprised if these aircraft were to visit the Philippines or Thailand! Singapore, however....

Especially considering that the PAF couldn't even afford surplus F-16 A/Bs, and in view of the "accomodations" awaiting the Raptors there. It's difficult to ascertain the conditions of the facilities (particularly the VC-5 hangar and aircraft parking apron, the newest then at Cubi Point, and if slabjacking of the settling NAS runway was pursued; Ditto with the maintenance hangar and parallel runway projects at Clark which were terminated for convenience due to the base closure and Mt. Pinatubo.

Not sure the range on an F22 but that's quite a hop. Hawaii was logistical for fuel most likely.
