New Aircraft For The Army Golden Knights?

Wed Feb 28, 2007 1:28 pm

Saw this shot in the database... noticed it's not the usual Fokker C-31.

I don't know. I know they had mechanical issues with their Fokker when they where up here last summer. The first day of Arctic Thunder they had to borrow an Air Force Herk to make the opening jump.

I am actually a bit surprised they employ the trotter, I would think that it would be too small for them.

Seriously though if they are going to replace the Fokker, then the C-27 would be the perfectly sized mount....if the Army will get off their can and order the damm thing.

Yeah. But I doubt the Army would be willing to provide a spankin' new plane for them to jump out of... I just read they recieved two Otters from the Alaskan National Guard with '79 regs. That does seem like a pretty big size decrease going from the C-31 to the Twin Otter... Odd.

They didn't get them from the AKANG.

The AKANG gave their OV-10's up for C-23's in 1996 approx. They went to the USAF Academy from what I understand.

There are still guys that are pissed they had to give up the Otters for Sherpa's.

Hmm... I read that on Joe Baugher's site. But I'll take your word for it... Either way, they're not new birds.

The other thing is that has the original twin otter short nose, I never saw an OV-10 that didn't have the longer nose.

UV-18, you mean?

Apparently the UV-18A has a short nose, while the UV-18B has the longer nose.

According to this site, the Academy uses UV-18Bs (2pilots + 17jumpers, room enough for the Golden Knights I would think) And the AK National Guard used UV-18As, which were sent to Marina, CA for UAV antenna testing.

Interesting stuff...

I think you might have mis-read that statement. I didn't see where it said that the one at Marina was ex-AKANG.

Oh I started to think about it, I think the nose was available as a factory upgrade for older aircraft.

Yeah here is the info.

They have the Otter and the friendship. They have had them both for years.

From a skydivers perspective...the t'wotter is a great jump plane - safe to exit (not as safe as a ramp job) and nice quick turnarounds between loads!
