Vulcan XH558 - Any News RE Trials & First Flight?

Wed Apr 04, 2007 4:52 am

As a keen Vulcan fan I have been watching the progress in getting XH558 back into the air again.

The last I heard (about 3-4 weeks ago) were they were refitting the engines.

I have looked at the 'Vulcams' on the Vulcan to the Sky website but they give nothing away, and there is no recent news on there either.

I know it is planned for the aircraft to lead the flypast over Buckingham Palace in June, commemorating 25 years since the Falklands, and then it is scheduled to appear at the Waddington and RIAT airshows.

Does anybody have some inside info with regard to when they will start taxiing trials, and then when the first test flights are scheduled for?

That'll be a NO then!!! - oh well. It seems that the finishing touches to XH558 are about as secret as a black project!!

As a once contributor to the fund, I get regular updates, nothing to report recently.
I delayed answering in the hope that something would come through to make a contribution to this thread worthwhile, maybe it will yet, Easter bank holiday lack of post and all that.

I looked on www.tvoc.co.uk yesterday (19th April) and can report that the first engine has been re-installed (No.3) and the team are working full pace to get XH558 back in the air.

There are some great photos on the website of the engine being winched into place, along with many others of the restoration project. There is also an opportunity to donate towards the restoration and buy XH558 and other Vulcan merchandise.

They are still optimistic that they can make the 17th June flypast over Buckingham Palace, but state that even if they don't XH558 will be ready early on this airshow season so it sounds as though there'll be plenty of chances to see and hear her!!!  Smile

I am sure I speak for all on a.net when I say a big thank you to all of the team for working so tirelessly and I wish them the best of luck in getting XH558 back up where she belongs.

I hope to see the Vulcan fly at the Yorkshire airshow in August.

I have only seen them in museums.

Just thought I'd let everybody know that the team at Bruntingthorpe have just lowered Xh558 back onto her own undercarriage.

Sadly it looks highly unlikely that she'll be ready for the June flypast over Buckingham Palace, but it shouldn't be too long now until they fire up those Bristol Olympuses once again.

I believe the plan is still to attend the Waddington and RIAT airshows - I can't wait!!!!  Smile
