F-35 JSF's Helmet-mounted Display

Sun Apr 15, 2007 8:48 am

Flightglobal has an article showing the JSF's helmet-mounted display
http://www.flightglobal.com/articles...lmet-mounted-display-revealed.html

Im sure this thing is one awesome piece of gear but man does it look uncomfortable. I wonder what the weight is? I wonder if after a few hours airborne it may begin to weigh on your neck. I know the JSF is suppose to be an over the horizon attacker but if this thing ever got into a dogfight, wouldnt a piece of gear like this put the pilot at a disadvantage? Seeing this makes me think that this might limit head movement. The ability for the pilot to look around during dogfights is something that seems to have been so important in the past.

Any thoughts?

I can't speak for sure on the F-35s system but I know when working on the helmet mounted sighting system for the F-16 and F-18 they developers would counter balance the extra weight to ease strain.
Learning to fly, but I ain't got wings.
