Does The Army Issue FAA Texts During AIT?

Mon Apr 30, 2007 4:41 am

Hi guys.

Let me give you the background, on why I am asking.

My kid brother just got out of basic and is currently stuck at reception hell at Ft. Eustis. What he is being told is that the 15 schools are up to 12 weeks behind. Meaning that he could be stuck at reception for 2-3 months waiting for a class slot to open up.

Anyway after checking his my-space blog, I saw where he is complaing about the fact that he isn't accomplishing anything, and I could see where doing a 3 hour litter patrol on the same 1/2 acre piece of ground will do that.

Anyway I was figuring that maybe what I could do to maybe help him out was run down to the local flight bookstore and pick him up a couple of the FAA 43 handbooks, but I want to make sure that they aren't issued as texts by the Army when he finally gets assigned to a class.

Is he at Advanced Infantry Training or Advanced Individual Training? If he is at individual I would imagine it would depend on his MOS. What is it? I'm not totally fluent in Army so if there was something in you post that gave it away I apologize.

P.S
You can tell your brother he has my sympathies. I waited 9 months at my training location for training to start after I came on active duty.

AIT, He is going to Blackhawk mechanic school.

I don't remember what the actual MOS is 15-something.

Unfortunately if the Army dicks around too much, he won't get back up here to start the fall semester at the local university.

I hope the AKANG was expecting him back sooner and can complain to the right people.

First, congrats to your brother for making an excellent choice to join the Army. And Black Hawks! Good man.

Second, I was in the same spot roughly 6yrs ago. I graduated in 2001 and went straight to basic and AIT. I waited around Fort Useless for about a month before I was put into a training class. But this isn't unusual - Army schools seem to always have some "hold status" prior to starting.

If he had hit the cycle towards the end of the summer/early fall - the wait would have been shorter because of all the high school graduates coming out of summer basic training. He seems like he just hit a low point where they're waiting to build enough warm bodies to start a class.

That sucks!

Well I'm sure you know from your own military experience that none of the Army pubs are off-the-shelf FAA books. They'll all be DoD/DA published and approved. So while the pubs might be very similar in content, they will not be the same.

And I don't see any problem with sending him those books. Good reading material is always worth its weight in gold when you're on class hold!

But I have a question - what 15 series is he going to be? If he's going to be a 15T.... then why does he need FAA issued pubs? The only 15 series that would need to be up-to-date with FAA regs is the 15P - ATC guys. And their AIT is at Fort Rucker.

That was pretty much the confirmation that I was looking for. I didn't really want to buy something he would be issued.

That pretty much what I was thinking. At at least this is subject related.

He was schedualed originally to go in September, then two weeks before his ship date, he was trying to finish up some projects he had, including replacing the rear suspension of a 3-wheeler he has. He replaced it and decided to go test it. Ended up breaking his leg and collarbone.

I went through Ft. Gordon back in 91 and I swear I only spend about a week-10 days at reception.

Short answer is that he doesn't, but the local pilot shop doesn't sell a lot of Army Tech manuals (Aerodynamics for Naval Aviators not withstanding). But any book put out by the Government Printing Office is pretty inexpensive.

Besides if he decideds to go after his civilian A&P based on his military training he can still use them as references.

15P is Flight Ops Specialist; 15Q is ATC. I was a 15Q3F7 (Pathfinder) before I got out and I'd rather be an 11B before I'd get stuck as a 15P. LOL

This whole new MOS series change is beyond me. The old system worked fine. Just like how we managed well with the c#*% cap, before the beret. Just like how the BDUs were fine before the ACUs...

Well it get worse for him. He finished up at basic last Saturday and ended up at Useless.

They made him Platoon guide at reception (I don't remember having one at rep at Gordon), so now the newbie is the platoon guy, which has ticked off some of the other guys that have been there longer for medial or infraction reasons.

He isn't having a good time.

been there, done that.

At least he isn't in some of the other, finer, "Hell Holes" the Army has. Ft. Bliss comes to mind, for some reason.

for many, many reasons, AIT is much worse than Basic. He better get used to the fact he will be doing a lot of "Police Call" before he gets out of AIT.

As the handle implies, I'm a 15P. I'm one of the guys that was mentioned to be in need of up to date pubs, and at my AIT we didnt' get issued any. He'll work of course with Maintenance pubs, which are put out by the Army, but I really doubt that he'll be issued anything of that nature. The only people that are ever really issued their own pubs are the 15A series (pilots) and that is mostly just flight pubs as well as their -10 for their airframe. If you looking to provide him with some reading material to keep him up to snuff on his civilian side, then sending him some FAA Pubs would be fine since there probably is no reason to expect that he would have any need of those from the Army, therefore would not be recieving them as issue. As for reading material, while I was at AIT I read a few books that were recommended to me by one my pilots, "Chickenhawk" by Robert Mason as well as "In the Company of Heroes", by Micheal Durant. Both great reads, and a must read by anyone in Army Aviation IMHO. As an aside, I'm really surprised that he is facing a wait for schools. It has always been policy that NG members get school slots ahead of active and Reserve guys. This is because our individual states pony up our salaries. So I can't expect that he will have to sit around for to long. When I arrived at 15P school there was a 3 month backup for school slots. But they bumped some Active guys and put the National Guard guys and and got them shipped back home ASAP.

Interesting because when I went to Ft. Gordon for 31F school, the class was issued a textbook, which we got to keep. I still have it in a box somewhere.

I was think of course that anything he gets from the army is going to be type (Crashhawk) specific. So I was thinking of maybe sending him a couple of general references.

I also was thinking of sending him Hersey Bars and Nylons to trade with the locals too.  dopey
