Video Of Near Plane Crash At Airshow

Tue May 22, 2007 11:32 am

Wow, my dad just showed me this video of what looks to be a Yak? When did this happen? It looks like he at least hit the ground for a short period of time.

WOW!

Even the PA announcer paused...swallowed the lump in his throat and then continued.

CLOSE!

It's saddening to see such historical aircraft being flown in such manner. They should be treated like old ladies since the purpose of keeping them is to show future generations what they looked & sounded like IRL.

I got hooked on the P-51 when I saw it at an airshow in Sweden many years ago. Just seeing and hearing the plane taxi into position is enough, the flying routine was just a bonus Big grin
I have yet to see a Spitfire IRL and sadly it looks like the chance is diminishing everytime one of the birds take to the air due to reckless handling.

You may be right, but to me looks much more like a Yak-3 or 9, etc.

Btw, so anyone know where this took place? It looks like Abottsford, Canada kinda.

Edit: It is a Yak, if you listen to the announcer he keeps saying "The Yakovlev factory produces...etc,etc".

Definitely a Yak. Probably a Yak 3 or 9. Many of these "warbirds" were actuallly produced quite recently just for the collector market.

The most amazing part of that video is the roll after the near disaster. Maybe he thought no one would notice?

So I am assuming no one knows where this took place and/or when this happened?

Yes, but it will be a while before the smell of crap leaves the cockpit.

I have watched & rewatched this video a number of times over the last several days. I have yet to see anything in the video that indicates this was nearly a crash. There is simply not enough detail in the video to indicate how close he was to the ground.

Contrary to popular opinion most airfields are not flat -- runways run over the tops of moderate hils, taxiways are crowned for drainage etc. I've worked some airfields where the paved surfaces were a yard or more above the surrounding terrain. The only good points of reference to the ground in the video are the near and far paved surfaces & I surmise the Yak pulled out somewhere in between.

If we could see the prop kickin' up grass/dirt or see the grass reacting to the ground effect - I could see where someone might think it was a near thing - but it's not there.

Found this in the comments area of Break.com.......

Bill anders; Abbotsford Airshow : I was there, and talked to the pilot, thats a P-51 Mustang they call the "Val halla" , and yes he saw his life flash before his eyes that day. Also note: those are the Snowbirds, a Canadian Airforce team like the Blue Angels who fly CT-144 tutors. Hope some of you come out to see the show this year! August 10 11 and 12 2007 at Abbotsford Airport, BC, Canada

I'm not convinced it's a P-51 either....

Here's a pix of Val Halla....

I find enough evidence in the video to say he was lower than he probably should have been.

Define nearly...

I think it is Val Halla. In the video if you look carefully when he is in the nose dive you can see a vary similar paint scheme to 'Halla's.

I think it is.

Quoting CFMTurboFan (Reply 12):

Nope. It's not a P-51. I did a little research, and I took a screenie of the video, on top, Val Halla in the middle, and a Yak 9 on the bottom. Compare the two to the top screenshot from the actual video. Look at the tail design, while the Yak's is curved, the P-51's tail is completely straight.

So yes, its a Yakovlev 9, im positive it is.  Wink

I agree! Having looked closely at it you are right. Also, it was not filmed in Abbotsford, I've just been out the back of the hanger, and there is nowhere near that many trees along the would be flight line, unless the local logging industry has been to work, but I doubt it.

Not Abbotsford, so where?

Yup it was a Yak-9 I am 100% sure myself... On a side note... one guy I know sold his P-51D and is replacing it with a T-33 and a Yak-9... I would love to get a ride in either the new airplanes...

Exactly I live in the lower mainland... and have been to the YXX airshow about 10 times... that is NOT YXX... at YXX there are farms in the background... PLUS they do not park the aircraft in front of the runway like that... the airshow runway is 07/25 and the static as well as the airshow performers park on 18/36 (i think it is) as well as other places but not in front of the runway like that... that is all grass at YXX well all I know is its not YXX... plus that is not the usual announcer... usually its Shell Busey (sp) hope that helps...
