AN-124 Landed At Miramar Yesterday (8/6/07)

Wed Aug 08, 2007 10:30 am

I saw it come in from the east as I was driving to work in the morning around 740am. At first I thought it was a C-130 from about the 52, it was in approach. Then as I got closer and it passed across the Kearny Villa, I was like, I've never seen one before, it looked like a cross between a C-5 and a 747, the thing didn't even appear to flare at all as it came down.

Anyway, why was it there?

They never do. The idea is to put as much touchdown weight on as many sets of tires as possible when they land. If they were to flare before touchdown, it would put most of the weight on the last set of tires.

It left for Biggs AAF (Fort Bliss) 4 hours later.

These have been used several times for transports to various military bases. Several times they've picked up shipments going out of the country to another, other times just doing normal shipping back and forth.

Pretty much the same reason you'll see Atlas 747's, or other commercial transport aircraft, popping out of bases as well.

I've seen them at McGuire AFB, more airlift.

I wonder if they fly into Iraq?

I see this aircraft often (at least once a month) at NAS North Island. The USAF also brings in a couple goodies like the C-130-30J and a couple C-17s. Last month an entire squadron of A-10s were here, that was an interesting sight to see. Too bad they are so anal about taking pictures here, otherwise I would take some for a.net.

We recently used them for one of our recently TDY's...amazing, whod'a thought that one day we'd be using ruskie equipment!

And I go out to Kelly AFB and see rows of C-5's just sitting around  bored

"The cockpit, what is it?" "It's the little room in the front of the plane where the pilot sits, but that's not importan

I've seen A124s over at March ARB a few times, presumly for heavy lifting.
