Why The Orange Suits? - Norwegian Fighter Pilots

Sun Oct 07, 2007 1:30 pm

Why are the Norwegian fighter pilots using orange suits ?

Is it incase of a crash over the North Sea that they are wearing them ? Easier to lookate for the salvage crew ?

I'd assume they consider the chances of needing to be rescued by friendly forces to be much greater than the chances of needing to hide from enemy forces.

If you want to be found you wear orange.

If you do not wish to be found you wear cammo.

Test pilots typically wear orange since they never fly over unfrendly territory.

Military pilots from Norway must believe they will always be flying over friendly terrritoy.

In German Air Force over-water-suits are olive/green. Maybe this is an Norwegian test pilot?

Looking at the other responses to your question, I'd say this is peace time flight wear; in war time the pilots would likely wear camo' flight suits. Orange is worn so that the pilot can be more easily found by rescue teams if he has to eject from the airplane.

When VF-114 based out of NAS Miramar was still around their pilots and RIO's wore orange flight suits when operating in the states.

I would figure that Norway doesn't have too many enemies in the world that they'd be flying over, so better to wear the orange in case of a mishap.

It's basically only terrorist treats to our oil and gas installations in the North Sea that are potential treats in Norway these days.

However Norwegian fighters have also been flying in Afghanistan, supprting American and British troops onthe ground. Before that they have been in Kosovo. I sure hope they don't wear these orange suits in combat...

Ah the orange flight suit... We use them over here for fighters during peace time...

- Fighters/Attack aircraft
Training and non combat mission: Orange
CAP & CIAS over insurgent territory: Camo
Over water CAP/ASuW Mission: Orange

- Transport
Routine Transport flight: Camo / office unif. Loadmaster sometimes orange... if he falls off an open rear door inflight, we want him to be found!
Overwater MP mission: Orange

- MP
All except overland recce missions are Orange, recce are camo.

- HeliTransport
Depends on territory not mission.

- Trainers
Orange

Those orange flight suits, when they put their G-Suit, it's Orange and Khaki! LOL
Those orange suits still help in finding bodies in a burnt out wreckage! *yucks*

RAF SAR crews wear orange and yellow immersion suits, but the flight crew wear the green 'growbags'.

After taking as good a look as is possible from the picture, my guess is that it is a plain-new survival suit in a gorgeous shade of orange. It would come in somewhat handy when flying from some of their more northern bases over water, where in wintertime the average lifespan floating in the water (post ejection) would be measured in minutes. As for the color - if it makes you easier to see in the water (in peacetime, of course), how bad can it be?

If I was a pilot, I would be sure to not file my taxes. The IRS will be sure to find you!!

Exactly, it is amazing how OD green water can be in the right conditions.

For the USCG it is blue with a grey leather rump.

I remember a story about the only USCG instructor on the C-130 at Little Rock AFB (Where all branches get their herk pilots trainded) and how everybody on the base refered to him as "Papa Smurf" due to the colors of his suit.
