Yeah, pretty interesting. I wonder if they use lead-based paint?

Looks like our Israeli brothers & sisters finally found someone to build the Lavi, Mazeltov! Wish it were us. Fantastic looking aircraft.

It would be hard to say for sure, but I would expect the USAF has a good idea of its performance considering the heritage of the airframe. It might be a new design for the Chinese, but in the end it is still a eairly 80s design.

But the Lavi was flying in 1987 (Dec 31 1986). Designed, built, and flying. The Eurofighter was flying in 94, the F-22 Raptor (not YF-22) put to the air in 97, the F-35 was 2 weeks short of 2007. Unless the Chinese put some super-duper engine and radar in the Lavi airframe... it is just a improved Lavi, which might be a hardware match for late block F-16s, and maybe F/A-18E/Fs.

I would expect the Lavi knock-off to be inferior to the original Lavi. The Chinese dont have the industry to build and maintain these jets themselves to the same standard as Israel did. It is just another Chinese knock-off, Israeli airframe with Russian engine and electronics.

In relation to the F-22, F-35, EF 2000... the J-10 should be called the QJ-10, cause that is what will happen, unless the Russians loan the Chinese a few pilots in a conflict like they did in Korea and Vietnam.

Wasn't the Lavi really a heavily re-worked F-16?

But theoretically wouldn't this airplane be used only in case of a conflict over Taiwan with the Taiwanese Air Force? Or have the plane used on patrol missions as part of coalition forces in future conflicts? Or against its neighboring countries that have vastly inferior air forces. Remamber the PLAAF strategy is still mostly defensive, not offensive. They have no longe range strategic bombers, no blue water naval capacity, no aircraft carriers, and limited air refueling capacity. They cannot project global power.

China doesn't have an offensive force at the moment, but they are working on it. They are/were trying to buy Russian Tu-16s, with cruise missiles designed to take out American aircraft carriers. The F-14 was designed nearly specifically to counter this threat. They have bought the Russian aircraft carrier Varyag, but probably wont use it themselves, but are studying it to build their own carrier. They are indeed working on a deep water navy, including nuclear submarines.

China is not a global force, yet.

a 50+ year old design that is hardly state of the art...

agreed but the question is how many years or decades in the future will it take them to reach this point? And whether their J-10 is geared as a offensive or purely defensive fighter??

And it still works. The B-52 is kinda getting up there... but it does its job well.

I wouldnt want to be the guy they blame when China shows up to play games with thier own Carrier battle group out of nowhere. I would assume they have these assets under construction as we speak. Maybe not the carrier yet, but it is only a matter of time.

The plane appears to have offensive capability, but that's not to say they can use smart bombs. I have to wonder if the Chinese are undertaking a phased development program, similar to the one being used with the Eurofighter Typhoon, and introducing improved and more capable versions of the J-10 as the years go by.
