If You Were In Flight School You'd Want To Fly....

Sat Oct 20, 2007 10:32 pm

If you had the chance to go/go back to military flight school (pilot or nav) what airplane would you try for?

For plane to fly in flight school?

The old F-9 Cougar...my uncle flew that back in the day before going to RA-5C's. Quickly sorted out the candyasses from the true grit, as I was told.

The TA-4J would have been great too, there's a true combat aircraft for you...

My dad was in one of the final classes for the T-28 at Corpus...now that would have been a handful of a plane for a new pilot to play with.

But realistically...looks like T-6's and T-38's for me.

After. If you were coming up on selection what modern day aircraft would you try for.

Good Choices. Without getting into too much detail I've heard stories about the T-28 and the F-9 that agree with what you said.

F-15/F-16 for the AF...I'm hearing the F-22 is going to be offered after JSUPT soon too. That's the beauty of the ANG, you never have to guess and pray for it, you know what you'll be flying.

For the Nav? The Hornet is the only thing nowadays, but it'd be awesome to get into the Prowler before it's gone, fly some old Grumman iron. Then again, you have three screaming NFO's you have to lug around, *kidding*.

After high school I was seriously considering joining the Air Force since I have always loved aviation but I decided to go the suvillian route instead. If I had to do it over I just might go into the Air Force, I've always loved F-18's and I'd love to fly an F-22.

By the way, this is my first post...woohoo. I've been browsing Airliners.net for years and I finally joined.

The Greyhound would be my pick. All the challenge and satisfaction of flying from the boat, yet all the quality of life of living on land:

Ever since I got a demo-ride in one of these as a teenager, trying out a stick for the first time and the superb view through the canopy, the Saab Safir has always had a soft spot in my heart.

I am surprised to see someone choose the same as me!

Either the Greyhound, E-2C Hawkeye, or the AD-1 Skyraider.

For flight school I'd love the chance to fly the Air Forces T-38. For actual operational flying my favorite has been the F-14 Tomcat. If it were to be helos I'd have to go with what my dad flies, the UH-1 Huey.

I would like to fly the F-14 as well. Because it doesn't fly anymore, I would choose the Hornet.Flying a F4F Phantom would also be great.

Hmm... Good question

I would like to fly the Mig-29. Any job flying would suit me though.

I also would like to see the Earth from FL750. I saw a photo from a U-2/TR-1 cockpit at that altitude, it was like being on the edge of space.

Here's one. Top of the line strike fighter or top of the line bomber?

I would not say I am going back ... as I have not yet earned the pre-qualifications as a pilot, But I would most definately say the F-16, F-22, F-14, F/A-18 , A-10, and of course, the sexy B-1B  Smile

No question ... AH-64, UH-60 or A-10. Damn infantrymen flying airplanes ! Scary stuff for any enemy!

Cool for picking up chicks , but lots of long boring flights lasting 10-12 hours... F/A -18 ... you get the chicks and lots of action !

More ignorance: I thought those piloting the E-2 lead the same live on carriers like say F-18 pilots?

My pick would be the F-14, and since this bird does no longer fly, I'd opt for the Rafale.

If I'm not mistaken, the C-2 crews are based (and live) on land, and rarely spend much time aboard the boat. I believe the E-2 pilots do indeed live aboard the boat.

They absolutely do. I don't know if it's still this way, but the E-2 used to be the first plane to take off and the last plane to land, as it was put up to look for threats and coordinate the fighters in the event anyone got too close.
