Thunderbirds F-16C Block 52s For 2009 Season

Wed Dec 05, 2007 5:41 pm

A friend sent me an article indicating the Thunderbirds will be using the F-16C Block 52 for their 2009 season. The airplanes (I believe the first has been handed over for modification and update) are going through an extensive modification program and won't be ready for the 2008 season.

I got the impression these weren't brand new jets. On the other hand, there was nothing in the article to indicate what unit(s) the planes came from. I'm assuming they'll get a Block 52 F-16D or two as well.

I have to wonder how much difference there will be in the show they perform. As I recall, Block 52 is quite a bit more powerful than the Block 32s they now fly.

It has the PW F-100-229, which has a great deal bit more power. As for the show, the manuevers will remain the same as always, so who knows...a good highspeed pass will be a bit easier with that beauty of a motor.

Do you supposed the Blue Angels will do an upgrade as well, in response? F/A-18Cs with the more powerful engines than those found in the A model Hornet?

In all honesty I don't know. I knew the early C models had the same engines as the A's, then the later C models got more powerful engines. Didn't know all had been converted to the later engine. You may be right. I'm not that in touch with what's going on in the Hornet world.

Neither team use 'new' jets. ALL come from the fleet and have a few thousand hours before going to the teams. In fact many jets are on their way to the 'bone yards' before going to the teams.
