Spitfire Mk VI -- Looking For Pics And Info

Fri Dec 07, 2007 8:47 am

Hi everyone,

I'm not a regular in this forum, but I'm looking for information on the Spitfire Mk VI -- I've recently bought a model of it that I want to build, but need pictures especially.

First off, how would I look for photos of this particular varient in the DB? I tried punching in various ways of writing the name ... and all I got was every Spitfire in the DB ... and no way of figuring out which ones were the ones I'm looking for!

The model I have has the "typical" rounded wing tips, which need to be cut off and replaced with pointed ones. The blurb that comes with the model indicates that the Mk VI wasn't as successful as it should have been, and many ended their days with the original rounded wing tips restored. Is this correct?

Thanks
Bren

Perhaps this web site will help: http://www.airtoaircombat.com/detail.asp?id=364

Found it just a moment ago. There's one picture there, but it appears to be of a rounded wing airplane of one of the Polish squadrons serving the RAF.

If you do a photo search for Supermarine Spitfire you'll get a list of, at the moment, 1721 photos. Above the top photo you'll see some text

Click on the highlighted

and you'll get another window where you can breakdown the images according to the choices in the dropdown box at the top. Choose "Aircraft Name" and then press Go and all the different variants will be listed...... unfortunately no MkVI though.

According to my sourses

A very good book by Alfred Price "The Spitfire Story" ISBN 1-85409-172-7

The Spitfire mk VI was more or less an mk VB with pressurized cabin
and it had extended wing tips

The service ceiling was 39200 ft

It was meant to be an high alltitude fighter

The mk VI had a Merlin 47 engine and the wing span was extended with 3 ft 7 inch

100 was build betwen Dec-41 to Oct-42

Cheers

Another very good reference is "The Supermarine Spitfire Part1: Merlin Powered" by Robert Humphreys, no. 3 in the Modellers Datafile series by SAM Publications. It contains plans for the various marks including the HF Mk VI. You should be able to order it from the web, assuming it is still in print.
