New Iranian Fighter?

Fri Dec 28, 2007 5:25 pm

How long until this jet looses a tail and then gets a Blue Angels/Thunderbirds-like paint scheme from Maaco. Maybe they will call it "Lightning" and fly it with "Thunder."

They could have had 4 F-5's flying if they had left it a one tail design. I guess they know something Northrop doesn't.  Wink

Looking at that F-14, I seem to notice an engine access panel removed and I think the swing-wing mechanism is exposed too. I'm guessing this F-14 hasn't seen a lot of flight time lately.

Probably just Iran attempting to flex a little muscle (although they have none). But as Michlis said, it looks pretty worn out and does seem to have a few panels missing.

I am still trying to guess what they (the IIAF) have gained over the F-5E, with this modification (twin slanted tail design)? Yes, this is a modification of the F-5, this is not a new build airplane.

Why did they remove the missile rails?

It also appears that the RIO's instrumental panel coaming (and presumably the panel and gear thereunder) are missing. Compare with this example:

A couple other panels are missing. Likely a hangar queen not yet relegated to "full donor" status (tires don't seem to be flat like some Libyan FOXBATS shared recently by Chris Lofting).

Very sad to see a perfectly good F-14 in such poor condition, even if it is Iranian. I was woundering if the US would ever try to cut a deal with Iran to get those aircraft back.

The IIAF F-14As have been in sad shape for years, maybe decades.

Why would we want those airplanes back? We have enough scrap metal now.

Why not with a little money and their low flight times we could at least muster a couple of squadrons of F-14 incase they are needed. That and we wont have to fight them later.

And deprive an F-22 of a perfectly good target?!

The Navy is done with the F-14, hence the mass scrapping of its Tomcat fleet. The money can be better spent elsewhere.

Iran is keeping those airplanes and probably flying a few of them regularly as a way of giving the finger to the US. The only way those airplanes are going to stop flying completely is if someone blows them up.

Acually I think our F-18 Superhornets or F-16 or F-15 for that matter, against the Iranian F-14's and pilots wouldnt be much of a match either.

Concerning the "thunder" and "lightning" IIAF F-5's, would the twin tail fin configuration offer any bennifits? Stability?
