2 US Navy F/A-18 Just Crashed In Persian Gulf!

Mon Jan 07, 2008 8:40 pm

Fortunately all the pilots ejected safely!

From CNN.Com

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Two U.S. Navy F/A-18 Super Hornets -- flying off the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman -- crashed Monday night in the Persian Gulf, U.S. Navy officials said.

The aircrafts' three aviators were recovered safely after they ejected from the jets -- a single-seat F/A-18E and two-seat F/A-18F.

The U.S. Navy did not immediately know the cause of the F/A-18 crash.

There is no indication of hostile fire action, the officials said.

The incident is not related to Sunday's confrontation between three U.S. Navy warships and five Iranian boats, Navy officials said.

Odd, two going down at the same time? Maybe launched too close to each other resulting in a midair?

Flightglobal now has the story.....

http://www.flightglobal.com/articles...hornets-crash-in-persian-gulf.html

Quote:
"Two US Navy Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornets crashed in the Persian Gulf on 7 January. The three crewmembers ejected safety and were rescued by teams from the aircraft carrier USS Truman.

The US Navy says the single-seat F/A-18E and two-seat F/A-18F 'were providing en route close air support from Iraq when they crashed.' The aircraft were from Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 3."

...maybe it was a re-joint maneuver gone bad!

Sounds more like a refueling went bad and had a mid-air.

Glad to hear all ejected and survived.

Seems most likely that they accidentally collided whilst in close formation.

How embarassing and unprofessional on the same day a few Iranian motorboats intimidates three "mighty" USN war vessels - someone needs to lose their wings and take up flying a desk for the rest of their short career.

Unfortunately not the first time this has happened to the E/F. I lost two good friends in 2002 under similar circumstances.

You have no idea what happened...maybe you should wait to see what happened.

I thought I heard this on network radio news as due to "the two aircraft attempted to share the same airspace"...really? ya think so? Duh! Anyway, glad to know the crew survived.

Why, the end result would still be the same - it was the wrong time to park their aircraft in the bottom of the Arabian Sea.

Did the USN recover the wreckage, if any?

How about instead of making assumptions we wait and see what happened. I'l glad the crews are safe.

Perhaps he meant Arabian Gulf -- it's what the Arabs prefer to call it.
You just never know.
