Mon Feb 11, 2008 10:51 am

Flight Global reporting:
http://www.flightglobal.com/articles...n-deal-for-24-ex-israeli-kfir.html

Quote:
Colombia is negotiating an estimated $200 million purchase of 24 ex-Israeli air force Kfir fighters to be upgraded with new electronic systems by Israel Aerospace Industries. The aircraft would replace Colombia's ageing fleet of 12 Kfirs and 12 Dassault Mirage 5COAs.

This is very good news for Columbia and IAI. The Kfir is still a very potent fighter.

Agreed and $200 mil looks to be quite a bargain. What were the French trying to sell? Rafales or more Mirages?

Hmmn, the plot thickens. Maybe the French bid was rejected because they were also trying to make a deal with Venezuela?

This gives me an idea. Since Colombia wants to replace their Mirage 5s and seems to be on good terms with Washington, while Venezuela has a hard time getting spares for its Falcons but appears to have a working relationship with France - why don't they exchange fighters?  Smile It might ease tension between them and pave the way for reunification.  bigthumbsup

Just was curious has the US offered them any used F-16's? or F-18's. there should be plenty in storage.

Even if they did, $200M for 24 aircraft is a great deal. Then there's the fact that many Columbian pilots are already qualified to fly the Kfir.

Colombia has hard time getting new french weapons due to Human Rights issues.

Colombia has asked for F-16's several times but, believe it or not, the US flipped them off.
Why?. Depends on who you ask. Some say political reasons, others say that Colombia wanted new-builts Block 50 at way-to-cheap prices, etc.

Though this purchase was made because of a lack of funds to buy anything better. Of any origin.

Considering that this would actually be the first colombian fighter equiped with an actual pulse-doppler radar, among other new capabilities they never had before. It won't be as easy.
AKeep in mind that Colombia hasn't even gotten their first Turbofan-equipped jet, and that they got their first AAM's ever in 1997, in the shape of Python 3's.

At least the Columbians will be able to get parts if any embargo happens, Israel and any other suppliers for the J-79 engine the Kfir has will be easy to aquire parts. The Iranians seem to have no proplems getting parts for their J-79 equipped F-4's and their J-85 equipped F-5's
I would help you but it is not in the contract

That's right. France has sold to Iraq, Iran, Syria, and Venisalia in the past.

France considers the US to have "human rights" issues, but has sold about 2000 CFM-56 engines for USAF KC-135s and USN E-6s. This doesn't count the thousands of CFM-56s used on Boeing B-737NGs.

Columbia can get what ever they want from France. All they have to do is be willing to pay the French asking price.

Of course. Problem is, the US congress will see that as "wait, they have enough money to afford brand new french fighers. So, why should we keep sending them money and support?" and would mean the end of the Colombia Plan and the Colombian goverment is too happy receiving US' Tax-payers' money to let it go just like that.

It now appears that the deal between Colombia and Israel has an additional component.....

http://www.flightglobal.com/articles...lombia-with-boeing-767-tanker.html

Quote:
"The Colombian air force is to receive a secondhand Boeing 767-300 converted for tanker and VIP transport duties by Israel Aerospace Industries. The deal will build on a recent contract worth $230 million, under which the company will also supply Colombia with 24 ex-Israeli air force Kfir fighters and upgrade some of its existing inventory of the type. Israeli sources say the 767 will be equipped with a hose and drogue refuelling system."

That would boost the Kfirs' range significantly.

Quote:
"Israel Aerospace Industries has delivered the first upgraded Kfir fighters to the Colombian air force.

[.....]

Upgrade activities include equipping the aircraft with new avionics, an EL/M-2032 fire control radar from IAI subsidiary Elta Systems, and a new electronic warfare suite. The modified aircraft will be designated as Kfir C-10s or C-12s, depending on their equipment fit."

Those will improve the FAC's airpower substantially.

How would these updated Kfir's compare to the SU's that Venezuela recently acquired?

No match. Although they don't seem to be looking for a confrontation with Tio Hugo. Just taking care that nobody else interferes with their business.

The Colombians Kfir haven't been fitted with the EL/M-2032 radar. They still keep the previous radar.
