RAF VC-10 At LAS: Any Info?

Sun Apr 06, 2008 10:06 pm

I took this undated picture at LAS probably in the late 90's, judging from the background (though I didn't note the date).

Can anyone shed some light on it, specifically the history and current disposition of the aircraft and perhaps what it was doing at McCarran as opposed to Nellis?

Couldn't definitively tell you, but the RAF sent the VC-10 a few times (in tanker form  Wink ) to BIF for the Amigo Airsho down in El Paso in the 1990's.

This one looks like it might be in pax. config. Maybe some of our friends from the other side of the pond could tell us: have all of the VC-10's been converted to straight tanker form, or did the RAF maintain some as troop transports (like the RAF L-1011's?).

In case these questions get no answers here in 'civil, the whole thread might get more attention over in 'MIl&Space ...
Shall we wait one day before hitting "SD" and get the thread moved ?

It quite possibly could have been in LAS for "RED FLAG" maneuvers out at Nellis AFB. LSV can sometimes be very congested during these operations. I have personally seen many different countries bring their planes in to LAS instead of LSV during this time. It could simply be a 15 minute flight over if the plane had to be there.

Not that unusual visitor to Vegas. Matter of fact discussed only a couple months ago.

In fact, we had one here just a couple days ago. Fortunately, VC-10's at LAS show up several times per year. Mostly timed with Red Flag excersises, but also for other excercises at Nellis. The main reason they come to LAS is because the RAF has a fuel contract with Signature Flight Support (one of the FBO's at LAS). Therefor

I'm sure an FBO owner would love a contract to refuel fuel tankers  dollarsign   dollarsign   dollarsign

Signature is the correct reason. Sometimes accomodation is an issue at Nellis and 2 Group, which controls the RAF Tanking Fleet has a large budget.... The crews never complain about being moved to operate from KLAS!!!
