CT-155 Hawk Crash At Moose Jaw

"Two pilots ejected safely before their CT-155 Hawk aircraft crashed near the 15 Wing landing strip during a routine training mission on Friday around 4 p.m."

It had just taken off, probably with a full load of fuel. At least the pilots were able to punch out.

I was an Aero Engine Technician at CFB Moose Jaw from 1982 to 1987. Most of the CT-114 Tutor crash remains that I saw, were landing accidents, therefore had little fuel in them, so they stayed relatively intact.

The biggest problem with the Tutor, was the marginal ejection seat, and probably caused its early retirement from training.

I remember one accident at YYC in about 84 or 85 where the engine failed on takeoff and the pilots ejected as the plane started to roll, the left seat pilot survived but the pilot in the right seat, who was the Base Flight Safety officer was killed.

Yes, I hope they are alright, ejecting from an airplane is hazardous, but not as hazardous as not ejecting.
