Commercial-military Airbase Shared Airports

Sun May 04, 2008 1:26 am

I would like to know, besides Stewart, PHX and FRA, of other commercial airports that are shared by US and non-US military airbases? Stewart is shared with the NY State Air National Guard (who operates a number of C-5A's and other freighter military aircraft), PHX from what I recall is shared with the Arizona Air National Guard and FRA is shared as a US Military airbase.

ABQ is shared between the airport and a full Air Force Base (Kirtland AFB). In fact, I was on an ATL-LAS flight last month that had to divert to ABQ due to a F/A becoming quite ill and the Kirtland AFB EMTs were the ones that responded to our aircraft. I believe they handle all emergency services at the airport, both commercial and military.

JAX shares the runways with the Florida Air National Guard Base there- an F-15 wing.

PDX shares the runways with the Oregon Air National Guard wing there.

SPS (Wichita Falls, Texas) shares the runways with Sheppard AFB.

Yeah, VERY lite. How is BLV doing these days? I've been hearing things off and on about gaining and losing service, which seems to be a cycle for BLV. Does G4 have scheduled service out of BLV? I see them on flightaware a lot, and I just saw that NW had a charter to AMS out of BLV. It seems like a nice airport and I hope things get better there.

MLB has Grumman on its property and we see military a/c all the time. We even had a Netherlands DC10-30 tanker come in in 2003. PHL has either the AF? or Army. CLT has that as well.

Yes, but they closed the air base two years ago. There are too many unused air bases near by. All countries but the US have largely reduced their armed fleets.

In Germany , Cologne has a large German air base. In addition, former airbases start to attract the LCC, look at FR at ETNL.

KC-135, been there for quite a few years now.

You can throw STL into the ANG mix, although they are just a small tenant at Lambert Field. And according to the most recent BRAC, it will be split up and sent to New Jersey and Oregon, IIRC..

I was in Germany in 1991-1993, Darmstadt, with the US Army. There have been huge reduction of forces by the US with
many base closings and consolidation to other bases. I believe operations at FRA were to move to Ramstein, which was alread a very large airbase back then.

SDF has ANG as well, but I don't know the size or purpose of the unit.

STL has (or had?) an ANG wing of F-15s. I always thought that was cute since you could see brand new F-15s coming off the line across the runway.

IAD- Dulles has a Luftwaffe detachment based there. You can frequently see a Transall or one of the A310s parked on the ramp, and their offices are next door to the airport hotel. As you are entering the airport off the Dulles Access Road, you will see a small sign indicating where the German Air Force is (the sign doesn't actually say Luftwaffe).

Huh, why do they need such a station at IAD? I would understand out west (Holloman), but not in this case...

Not a clue- the RAF used to have a similar setup there as well until 1998 or 1999. They had a near-daily VC-10/L1011 flight from Brize Norton. They are still semi-regular visitors, but it's sadly been a while since I've seen a VC-10 there.  Sad

The Boise Air Terminal shares with the A-10's of the Idaho Air National Guard. Used to have C-130's as well, but I believe they have moved them somewhere else. The Idaho Army National Guard also has a large helicopter contingent at BOI. The airfield is also busy during the summer with the National Interagency Fire Center, as many different types of fire fighting aircraft use the field to refuel and refill the fire retardant.

Out here in Comox, BC.

Comox Valley Airport (YQQ) is shared with CFB Comox, where we have 442 SAR Squadron with DHC-5s and CH-149's, and a Maritime Patrol Sqn with some CP-140 Auroras (What you Americans would call a P-3).

Victoria International Airport, to the south, is shared with 443 Sqn, who fly Sea Kings.

Just in case you visit one of these Italian airports with a good digital camera...

@ TRN the commercial flights share the same runway with the brand new EF-2000 (built here by Alenia Aeronautica) and other militar A/C as Tornado, AMX, C-27J...

@TAR (Taranto-Grottaglie) the runway used by Alenia Aeronautica and Boeing for its Boeing 747-400 LCF, is also used by the AV-8B of the Italian Navy

Other airports where the militar and civil flights share the same runway:

@PSA: home base of the C-130J and the C-27J Spartan

@PNL: here you can find a variety of militar a/c passing trough the apt

@TPS: F-16 and HH-3F

@RMI and BDS: HH-3F
