Nato May Buy $700 Millon Worth Of C-17's

Fri May 09, 2008 7:33 pm

With the notification of congress, it sounds like this deal is finally going through. But what's that enough for, 3 frames?

NATO may buy $700 mln of Boeing cargo planes

WASHINGTON, May 9 (Reuters) - The Defense Security Cooperation Agency said on Friday it notified the U.S. Congress of a possible sale of $700 million worth of Boeing (BA.N: Quote, Profile, Research) C-17 cargo planes to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

The proposed sale would also involve contractor United Technologies Corp (UTX.N: Quote, Profile, Research), the agency said in a statement. (Reporting by Julie Vorman; editing by John Wallace)

700million, sounds more impressive than writing "three planes" or whatever you get for that amount of cash.

Does that include spare parts?, the dollars do not go far these days, I do not care whose they are, 3 planes?

Looks like its only two for now. In the end they will probably have a fleet of 4-6.

It will be interesting to see if they use Luxembourg for aircraft registration like they did with the E-3 Sentry.

Are these going to be used C-17As (as in non-ERs) from the USAF inventory? The Flight Global artical implies the airplanes come from the USAF, and not Boeing.

"DOD is requesting approval from Congress to sell two C-17s with a long list of necessary add-ons, including four Pratt & Whitney F117-PW-100 engines, ALE-47 countermeasure dispensing systems, spares, pyrotechnics, crew armour and other items"

Probably because the sale would be through the government's Foreign Military Sales program, and is not vendor direct.

There is no mention of USAF aircraft being involved.

Wonder if France and Germany will be involved as they were pushing for the lease of An 124 back then and always claimed the C17 was too expensive.
It will forever be a McDonnell Douglas MD 80 , Boeing MD 80 sounds so wrong

France and Germany have been able to successfully block the acquisition of C-17s in the past due to their tie in with the A-400M program. Let's see how this plays out. In all honesty though, are 2 C-17s really going to make that much of a difference for ALL of NATO to use? The UK and Canada alone operate 5 and 4 respectively.

Most probibly, NATO will get 6 C-17s, but their requirement is for "8 equivelent C-17s". I read that to say they would like to buy 8 of them, but can only be assured of funding for 6.

RAF has obtained funding for a 6th C-17 and there have been statements from senior air officers to the extent that they'd like 8. As for Canada, with the recently-announced defense build-up, it's possible that 1 or 2 more might be acquired.

Coincidentally, of our 4 C-17s, 2 are U/S right now (or were last week, 1 in Bangkok and 1 @ home base) and we're back tro chartering An-124s for some heavy lift. Hopefully these a/c are not going to be hangar queens.

That is great news for the C-17 program.

Well, the An-124 can lift a lot more than the C-17 can, so it really depends on what needs to be moved via airlift.

The contract should include some spares, manuals and drawings (with revision service), crew training, maintenance training, and on-site technical support.
