Russian Warplanes Reportedly Strike TBS

Sun Aug 10, 2008 2:17 am

Russian media reports (quoting Georgian sources) that Russian warplanes conducted early morning raid on Tbilisi International Airport (TBS) as the conflict in South Ossetia continues. AFAIK, all civilian flights in and out of TBS have been suspended since yesterday.

I pray for the quickest end to this unfortunate and ultimately pointless conflict where both parties only stand to lose regardless of the military outcome.

Russia bombs Tbilisi airport, says official
Sat Aug 9, 2008 10:05pm EDT

TBILISI (Reuters) - Loud explosions rocked Georgia's capital early on Sunday, and a senior official said Russia had bombed Tbilisi's international airport.

"Russian jet fighters have dropped three bombs on Tbilisi's airport," Shota Utiashvili, the head of the Georgian Interior Ministry's information department, told Reuters.

Reuters correspondents working in Tbilisi heard the three loud bangs shortly after 0530 (0130 GMT).

Scary situation in that region, hopefully it can be resolved very soon.

Apparently Kutaisi Airport (KUT) has been bombed as well...

My guess would be that they destroyed the runway to prevent its use by Georgian air force - they did the same yesterday at two main Georgian military airfileds.

I recall Israelis doing exastly the same a couple of years ago at Beirut (BEY) - I wonder how long does it take to repair a modern runway after such strike?

The linked Reuters article has been updated. It now says that a military airfield near the international airport has been hit by 3 bombs.

An interesting fact ois, that the Georgian government is promoting that airfield, which is close to TBS with an almost parallel runway as a cargo hub and future logistic centre.

Looks like these developments have just experienced a major setback.

This article in "Die Zeit" speaks about the attempt to destroy the runway of the Tiflis military airfield -but seemingly the Russian planes did not succeed.(as of yet..)

The civilian airport has not been attacked and is operational though flights are understandably suspended.

What was bombed is a smaller military airfield very close to TBS, as discussed earlier in this thread.

If one looks at TBS's website, it does show some carriers still operating and the British Foreign Office has mentioned that British citizens should leave while some flights are still operating.

Interestingly, Finnish Foreign Minister Stubb (in his capacity as Chairman in Office for the OSCE) and French Foreign Minister Kouchner (representing the EU Presidency) were slated to fly into TBS a few hours later. My information is that they arrived safely, but I wonder if the Russians were also sending a bit of a message to them?!

I wonder if Moscow would get annoyed if Georgia dropped a few bombs on its airports?

Propaganda going full blast.

"Saakashvili said Russia has sent 20,000 troops and 500 tanks into Georgia. He said Russian warplanes were bombing roads and bridges, destroying radar systems and targeting Tbilisi's civilian airport. One Russian bombing raid struck the Tbilisi airport area only a half-hour before the EU envoys arrived, he said."

More propaganda?

...
However, this move does indicate Russia is potentially upping the game from a conventional weapons war to a tactical nuclear weapons war. Gardiner notes that at a news conference on Sunday, the US Deputy National Security advisor has noted these weapons arriving in South Ossetia.
