CV-22 To The Rescue In Hurricane Ike

Fri Sep 12, 2008 5:21 pm

CNN is reporting that the Coast Guard has asked for help from the USAF in rescuing the 22 sailors stranded on the freighter in the Gulf that is in the path of Hurricane Ike, and the USAF is sending out an Osprey to pluck the sailors out of harm's way. If true, this ought to be a pretty interesting news item for us aviation nuts. And while not the first time it will have been used in a rescue operation, it certainly may be the highest profile rescue to date. Let's hope they are successful.

And this is why I wish the USCG would pick up this equipment.

They haven't had a real HH3 class aircraft in their fleet since the Pelicans where retired in the early 1990's.

Jayhawks are good but they lack the cabin space.

And the extra speed of the Osprey would be essential for rescue work, especially in cold water.

Hopefully this rescue is successful and the USCG will decide to pick up a few of them.

Just saw an update on Foxnews at 0250 local time: Air Force rescue was forced to turn back due to weather, USCG helo made the rescue. Video showed a helo hoist operation, don't know which asset made the rescue. If anybody has the particulars, please post.

Nope. The crew is still at sea, but they are alright.

You might be confused because some of the "ship rescue" reports were intermingled with other "Coast Guard rescue" footage of helicopter crews rescuing stranded motorists and people from flooded homes.
