A-1D Skyraider Cabin?

Sat Sep 27, 2008 9:04 pm

My first post in Military Aviation.

I saw this photo:

and I noticed the cabin door. I did some searching on the google and discovered that the Skyraider could carry up to 4 people, I never knew this. I'm curious if anyone has any information on what it was used for, and if there are any photos of the "cabin" area of the aircraft.

In a USAF A-1E (originally a USN AD-5N night attack version with side by side seating), Major Bernard Fisher won the Medal Of Honor, for landing and rescuing USAF Major Jump Myers, who used the hatch to climb (jump?) into the aircraft.

There are some nice websites made by former Skyraider pilot, describing into detail their mostly "Sandy" missions.

With regards to your question I looked but found alomost no pictures. Apparently nobody has a look inside these ugly & effective machines..

Some odd drawings of the use of the sizeable cabin space available.

I just knew there had to be some so looked a little further..

Here are some photos of the cockpit and cabin from a Swedish target-tug.

This was formerly operated by Royal Navy as the AEW Mk 1 -converted from a AD-4W, similar to the one displayed on the USS Midway

As mentioned there where both AEW and COD versions of the Skyraider.

It does seem a bit of a waste for that platform though.

Due to it's slow speed it could carry special ordnance....
