3 C-17's At IWA

Wed Oct 22, 2008 4:54 am

Today I noticed three C-17's parked at IWA in front of a remote building/hanger. Any idea why they are there? Last weekend I noticed them practicing touch and go's then a bit later that day they were lined up very close in trail (half mile) on the base leg and final approach for landing.

Not sure, but I saw them there on Monday during the memorial services for DPS Officer Bruce Harrolle.

Forgive me for asking, but where is IWA?

Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport in Mesa, Arizona.

There were about 8 there for a week last year when I was flying out of Gateway. There is a Boeing facility at IWA so that might have something to do with it.

The C-17s do work-up exercises out of IWA prior to deployment, or any other training the crews or air wing require. And sometimes they do "stuff"......

Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport was the former Williams AFB which closed in 1993 and reopend in 1994 as a public airport

The airport houses several military related contractors including Boeing and L3 Communications and has regular flight activity by AZ National Guard and nearby active AF units. Also T-38s are a pretty regular sight being overhauled by vendors at IWA.
