Obama Gets First Ride On C-32A!

Mon Jan 05, 2009 12:06 am

President-Elect Obama arrived at Andrews Air Force Base this evening from Chicago Midway aboard A C-32A VIP aircraft along with his wife Michelle and his staff and press pool.

According to CNN, this was his first trip aboard a federal government VIP aircraft. Obama was introduced to the Chief Steward who will be the Chief Steward on Air Force One once Obama is in office.

Obama also commented to the press onboard the C-32A that the aircraft was "pretty nice digs"!

This was Obama's final trip from Chicago prior to his swearing in as the new President of the United States.

His two daughters were aboard too.

But, this is not unusual as the USAF always picks up the President-Elect for their flight to ADW about one to two weeks before they are sworn in.

Then President-Elect George W. Bush, wife, and family was flown to ADW aboard a C-32A in January 2001. Then President-Elect Bill and Hillery Clinton flew aboard a VC-137C in January 1993. In fact all President-Elects since 1968 have been flown to ADW aboard a USAF VC-137B or C or the C-32A (for Bush and Obama).

These are SAAM missions and use the aircraft tail number as the call sign (for example: SAAM 26000 for the early VC-137C)

Just to clairfy:

The flight last night was only Barak Obama as his wife and two daughters got to DC on Saturday and I am not sure if they flew military or not.

Secondly, since Obama was previously a senator he has flown in those type of aircraft before, this was his first flight on military hardware as the President-Elect.

First, one should never trust CNN to report accurately! Secondly, I guess what had the biggest impact on me personally was watching the President-Elect step off an aircraft with "United States of America" in big letters down the side of it.

It's one of those moments that makes the tidal change in the U.S. administrations seem so "real". I just pray that the "change" we Americans were all promised is just as real.

And the fact that the "Change" occurs every 4-8 years without any shots fired, no coups, no riots, nothing. Maybe just a bunch of dissapointed voters, right?

I'll still miss Bush walking down those steps- he knew how to give a great salute to the guards at the bottom.

If that is the presidential criteria then I don't understand why you don't just have a monarchy. About the only thing the Royals know how to do well is a proper salute...

OK, so the President-Elect arrived at ADW in one of the C-32s. How did President and Mrs Bush (#43) get back to Crawford, TX? Was it a military flight or civil? C-32, VC-25, C-20, C-37, C-40? All adequate I believe. Also when President and Mrs Bush left the White House today, was it by helicopter or motorcade?

When the inauguration ceremony was over, Bush boarded one of the "Marine One" helicopters (but it wasn't called Marine One because he was no longer pres.) that took him from the Capitol to ADW. He then had a private gathering for some of his supporters in a hangar, then boarded one of the VC-25s, tail number 28000. The flight to Midland, TX was identified as SAM 28000. SAM stands for Special Air Mission.

28000 was the first VC-25. 29000 followed somewhat close behind though.

I heard that somewhere, but I don't understand why they would use that call sign. "Executive 1" is the C/S used when the President is on a civilian aircraft. Neither was the case here.

My point that the use of the "Executive 1" c/s is (to my knowledge) only used for when the sitting President travels on a civilian aircraft. Just as the VC-25 used the call sign "SAM 29000" when flying GWB back to Texas, I would have expected the Marine helicopter to use some similar Marine c/s. "Executive 1" would be inappropriate for use when carrying a former President.

- I want to bet that for the first several months any trips President B H Obama will take to the eastern half of the continent, he will probably select the C-32. My reasoning is recognizing the economy and budget. Just a guess, The Secret Service may have differing opinions.

To the best of my knowledge, the President has little say over which aircraft is used in his travels. The decision is made by the Secret Service, the White House Travel Office, and somewhere within the 89th Airlift Wing.

I would imagine that he could request a specific aircraft type, though those charged with is safety would probably explain to him why their decision is the best.

He's the commander in chief. If he really chooses to be flown on a smaller aircraft for economical or just publicity reasons, he will have the final word in that.

The point is that he will probably not have to arrogance to overrule the professional opinion of people who work in their jobs a lot longer than he does ....

CNN says that Nat Geo just happened to catch Obama flying on "Air Force One"

Then they show him CLEARLY getting on C-32A....saying he's on Air Force One (he's not president yet...blah blah blah)

Then they show the VC-25 flying around...and Land at ADW...but he wasn't ever on VC-25...but Nat Geo or CNN will suggest otherwise.

That is correct. They received a brand new armored limousine, (makes me drool) and it is a diesel that gets about 8 mpg. Now, they "might" be able to run bio diesel in it like the Air Force uses, but who knows...they may have to do some extensive research on it...

And just like Obama wanted more hybrid cars, they might be able to replace some of them...but a few of them must be able to accelerate quickly and pass tests and other standards set by the White House Military Office.....

My point is...

It is just a initiative of Obama to launch a "greenification" of the fleet. But they can only do so much.

As for the airplanes, I agree. It all has to do with security and what is practical.

I once heard the C-32 is cramped as it is with the VPOTUS on board.

And again, I did not know that with every new president the VC-25s get a new commander. Does the new president get to choose who he wants in the left seat or is that an 89th AMW decision?

Since the show aired within a week of his inauguration, and before he flew on Air Force 1 (either the VC-25 or C-32 variant) it would have been difficult to have much more about him then they did.

It sounds like it's a fairly new tradition to have a new commander come on board with the new president, I hadn't heard that before. And I'm sure that's a decision made by Air Force leadership - it looked as if it was the first time Mr. Obama met the pilot was when he boarded the C-32 shown in the show.

Not necessarily - they could be qualified in both aircraft, with the "President's pilots" flying him in whichever plane he is using. Some of our members with experience in the 89th could provide a more definite answer.
