F-16 Firing On It's Own Controltower..

Sat Jan 17, 2009 2:46 pm

A fighter pilot in Norway made a big ore huge mistake when he and he's college was on a training mission where they was supposed to hit a large oil tank but missed it by 1,5 km and firing with live rounds at it's own air control tower instead...four people where inside the tower, luckily most of the fire didn't hit the tower....Is this kind of mistake common ore easy to make?

Only in Swedish,sorry.

No, that kind of mistake doesn't happen to often. But, somehow, I think, in this incident, these two pilots just ended their flying careers.

Missing a target by 1.5km is a lot of error. that's about 1600 yards, or 4800'.  boggled   boggled   boggled

By control tower they must me some sort of forward air control station and not the actual ATC tower, right? It doesn't make sense that a their target would be that close to an actual ATC control tower.

It was probably the range tower at the gunnery range. A buddy had an F-16 dump 3 BDU-33s on his tower. There was only property damage to the adjacent building.

Tabloids... They tend to exaggerate things...  Yeah sure
It's unclear if the tower on the picture is the actual tower or a similar one.

A couple of years ago German Tornado accidentally hit the control tower of Vlieland Range in the Netherlands with its 27mm guns. 3-4 rounds hit the tower, but I don't recall anymore if anyone was hurt, nor whether they used live rounds.

Edit: Found an old Reuters News:

Quote:

Amsterdam 23/1/01 15:48 UTC

A German Tornado jet fighter accidentally opened fire on a Dutch military flight tower during a routine training mission, the Dutch defence ministry says.
No-one was injured in the insident at the North Sea island of Vlieland, although 3 people were in the tower which was hit by 7 27mm rounds fired from the aircrafts wing cannon.

A Defence ministry spokesman said "The cause of the incident is not immediately clear"

He added the tower was struck about midway up, below the glass enclosed area where the 3 people were working.

Correct. The Navy guys need something big, like ships to hit.
