US To Sell 4,5 Cobras To Turkey

According to the article:
"the US-based Bell Helicopter firm will interrupt the Cobra production currently under way for the US Marine Corps and instead use the production line to manufacture helicopters for Turkey"
Turkey needs some attack helicopters until the 50 Mangustas arrive, but I didn't realize that even getting 4,5 Cobras is this hard.

That article leaves a lot of questions to be answered - why would Turkey want four or five AH-1Z's of which they have little in common with in their AH-1W's? And if they are going to buy AH-1Z's, than why not make them buy the whole lot and cancel their Mangusta order?

Why would the US want Turkey to have four or five AH-1Z's anyways, go ahead and let them buy the Mi-28's. And ohhhh yeah, the Turks just desperately need these attack helos like yesterday because those northern Kurds are just so rowdy.  Yeah sure

My first thought is can some of the grounded AH1 be restored to service or are there any at DMA.

My second thought is why are there in such a rush that they will buy MIL28 purely as a stop gap.

IMO this is primarily a political rather than military purchase.

If you have not noticed Turkey has been involved in near weekly combat operations along its Southeast borders and additional gunship helicopters are desperately needed.

Turkey would happily acquire the Russian choppers as it has had good experience with previous Russian helicopters, however the US obviously rather break up MCAS production to provide a few tails and keep the Russians out of the market.

But for what does Turkey need gunships for with the Kurds? That's like using a .44 Magnum to bust beer bottles - just a bit overkill.

The Kurdish terrorist/insurgents use a whole host of weapons including RPGs, mortars, truck mounted heavy guns and even SAMs having been equipped with SA-7 and SA-9s since the late 90s. Over the years Turkey has had multiple helicopters shot down including Cobra, Black Hawks and Cougar transports.

The mountainous fighting is ideal for gunship helicopters ops to access areas that are difficult to reach by ground forces.
