Air Force One Tour On National Geographic Channel

Sat Jan 24, 2009 3:44 pm

This morning I accidently stumbled on this information about an upcoming television special on the National Geographic Channel. It will air January 25th at 8PM. I know there are many A-Net members who like to see Air Force One when the chance comes along so I didn't want this information to slip by you or I. In the meantime go to this link and near the upper left you will see 5 options. They are:

Overview-Video-Photos-The Plane-More

Just for the fun of it depress Video and watch that. It is brief but interesting. You will have to depress the yellow play button when you see the new AF1 Pilot and Barack Obama at the top of the stairs as he comes on board. Enjoy this.......

What gets to me isn't the relatively archaic round-dial cockpit with the F/E panel, the conference rooms or the private Presidential stateroom. Did you see that huge kitchen with the dedicated crew? Talk about crew coordination!

It's been on a few times already... For those of you who haven't yet seen it, you won't be disappointed.

That is the older one when Clinton was president.

This one is on for the first time on Sunday the 25th 8PM eastern.

Air Force One - National Geographic Channel

I watched the preview with then President-elect Barack Obama being welcomed on board but when he flew from ORD to Washington after his vacation in Hawaii wasn't the 757 that was dispatched to take him to Washington and not the 747.

Is the 757 configured to accomodate the president in a smaller scale as the 747?

The one I'm talking about was made much more recently.

It shows the logistics involved for a multi-stop trip to Africa that President Bush took. This particular program just debuted a couple of weeks ago...

The show airing this Sunday is not about the trip to Africa either, it is indeed a new show.

The 757 typically carries the Vice President or First Lady, but does occasionally accommodate the president to places where the 747 is operationally impossible.

Correct.. that was filmed this past summer and was just shown on the History Channel. The show Sunday was filmed this fall and includes Barrack Obamas flight on the VC-32...which was his first trip to DC to have his security meeings after the election

Everyone:

I am pretty sure you will be able to buy it on iTunes for about 1.99 or 3.99 US after it aires like all of the other shows.

The Secret Access: Air Force One with President Bush is for sale on iTunes under "History Channel Specials"

To be honest, I like this show better. This was more in depth look at the Presidential Airlift Group than the National Geographic show.

I loved the show. I was amazed when they had video of the upstairs part including the cockpit and communications console. I thought for sure that was off limits. I about fell off my couch when I saw that. Plus they went in the "attic" of the plane and showed some of that as well which I thought was top secret.

NatGeo did an amazing job with this one.

Hearing the story of 9/11 on AF1 and the secret trip to Iraq was some of the best TV I have ever seen.

I was more surprised watching the show about Marine One. I had no idea there were so many helicopters that flew with the President. I thought there was only 1 Marine One helicopter in the fleet. It seems like there's always 1 or 3 decoys, 2 support copters and several CH63 craft.

I watched the show, and I was pretty sure that it was the VC-25 that picked up Obama in Chicago; the promo said it would have Obama's first flight on it. The VC-32 may have taken him to Hawaii and elsewhere between the election and inauguration, but the scene where they asked him what he wanted for dinner did not look like it was in a 757.

I especially liked it when they tried to impersonate a Gulfstream and some other pilot came on the air and asked if it was AF1, and was told no, it's a Gulfstream. The pilot obviously must have figured out what was going on and shut up; if he was close enough to even suspect that it was AF1 he would have been SURE that it warn't no Gulfstream.

Nope... for his National Security Briefing just after the election he was taken to DC on a VC-32.... he was taken to HNL on a chartered UAL 757.

OK. But I'm quite sure the flight to Washington for the inauguration that was depicted on the program in question was on the VC-25.

Beyond the news reports stating that he traveled on the C-32 from Chicago to DC, if you watch the scene when he comes up the stairs and onto the aircraft, you can clearly see the winglet on the port wing. The C-32s now have winglets, the VC-25 doesn't.

Not to mention the narrow 757 door he enters through. Without a doubt it's the C-32.

You are 100% correct...he has only flown on the 757 Variety (C-32)

I complained about this on Friday in another thread.

CNN says that Nat Geo just happened to catch Obama flying on "Air Force One"

Then they show him CLEARLY getting on C-32A....saying he's on Air Force One (he's not president yet...blah blah blah)

Then they show the VC-25 flying around...and Land at ADW...but he wasn't ever on VC-25...but Nat Geo or CNN will suggest otherwise.

I just watched it and it is a very well done piece and they told more then I thought that they would, like about the "attic" and also showing the jamming devices.

Did anybody else notice the UA 744 along with the plane on the 2008 mid east trip

With the trip to Iraq in 2003 and the backup plane landed at a still classified AFB, why is it still classified and where do you think that it is, my guess is in Turkey because it is a friendly country near Iraq

It was likely someplace that would be "politically sensitive" to have a VC-25 drop into. I don't think Turkey fits; we've had a USAF base at Incerlik for years. I suspect it was probably one of the middle eastern states that want to maintain a certain arms-length distance from the US in public.

The flight shown was January 5th, when he officially moved to DC (only reason the VC-32 was there). All other flights as PE were on commercial. AA MD-80 for the Nov. 10th trip to DC, and UAL 763 for the Hawaii vacation.
