Greek Court Convicts Turkish Pilot Over Collision

Thu Feb 05, 2009 7:49 pm

A Greek court has convicted a Turkish F16 pilot whose aircraft collided with a HAF F-16 over the Aegean; both pilots ejected, but unfortunately the Greek pilot was killed.

The Greek court convicted the Turkish pilot, Lt Ozdemir, in absentia. I'm actually quite surprised that the court of an EU member state would do this; if the tables were turned and a Turkish court convicted a Greek pilot in absentia, there would be all sorts of finger wagging over the Turkish legal system. I doubt if the Greek courts would have convicted a national of another EU member state in this way, as it contravenes a basic principle of natural justice.

IMO this is a bad precedent.

Clearly everyone regrets this collison and the fatal consequences.

However the pilot is just the foot soldier in this situation.

Ultimately this accident is the result of the ongoing hostilities between 2 countries that should resolve their differences by negotiation.
