Which AFB Did I Fly Over From OAK To SLC?

Fri Mar 20, 2009 10:42 pm

On March 18 I flew between Oakland and Salt Lake City and about ten minutes east of Oakland we flew over a large military complex. On the ground seemed to be dozens of heavy cargo aircraft and the base had two long runways. Was this Edwards Air Force base perhaps or somewhere else? Thank you.

Edwards AFB is about 400 miles south of Oakland, a little more than ten minutes flying time.

More than likely as Travis AFB sits about 40 miles north east of Oakland.

Unlikely to be EDW since they have 3 paved runways and 9? official lakebed runways on the desert floor. Also, most of their aircraft aren't large. So I'd probably agree with others who suggested Travis AFB.

Seeing EDW from the ground is pretty cool, too. Smile Driving up to it from the south via desert back roads, you can easily see it from at least 100 miles out on a good day. From the air, if you're paying attention, you can see the large compass rose etched into the ground as well as the lakebed runways.
DingDong, honey, please answer the doorbell!

I've been there a couple of times for the air expo. I went there last year with another a.netter. All he did was drink and chased after girls.  Wink

I certainly appreciate the answers on this one. I consider myself to be somewhat knowledgeable about the military so I knew this wasn't Beale AFB but I'm embarassed to admit I forgot it might have been Travis.
