Video Footage Of J57-powered KC-135A

Fri Apr 24, 2009 4:33 pm

Found some good footage of a J57-powered KC-135A I thought would be good to share on here:

I remember threads on here stating that the original KC-135A's powered by J57 turbojets with water injection were among the loudest aircraft ever used by the military. I doubt water injection is being used in this video, but they're still loud and smoky! Fantastic sounding aircraft; really they don't sound much different than JT3D's/TF33's, especially when landing.
Also some footage of a CFM-powered KC-135R.

Some of them are KC-135Rs. The big fat engine pods underneath the wings hide the CFM56s. Seem kinda loud and I don't hear the usual CFM buzz, but perhaps that's the cowling design (or dubbing). Certainly numbers 3,4, and 5 are 'R's.
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

I'm just going to put that on a loop and let it play over and over until I fall asleep tonight. What memories that brings back!

The first bunch of takeoffs and landings were a mix of A and R models. Back at that time, Castle AFB was the "schoolhouse" for KC-135 and B-52 crew members - that was where everyone went for initial and (most) upgrade training. I wouldn't be surprised if all those clips were of students doing pattern work, performing touch & gos. In that case, you wouldn't use water injection on the A-model, it was only used for initial takeoff.

The airshow shots - both the static display, and all the flying, were of the R-model.

As they used to say: "The KC-135, built when man thought he could burn water"
KC-135 - Passing gas and taking names!

No water injection in those first few seconds of the film, but the engines are loud just the same. I worked on KC-135As at Altus AFB in the mid 70s and remember them fondly. Old as they were, they were nonetheless reliable and we didn't loose any during my three years there.
Dare to dream; dream big!

Ahhhhhhhhhhh the memories. I went through my initial qualification on the KC-135A (KC-135Q difference at Plattsburgh), then later, CFIC at Castle (KC-135E difference at Pease), and fianlly as an Instructor Boom Operator at Castle. I also had some KC-10A training when a KC-10 was deployed to Carswell.

But, I really loved those old steam-jets.  bigthumbsup
