Help With MiG Types Please.

Mon Aug 24, 2009 10:31 pm

I need some help identifying the sub-types of these "stored" MiGs.

MiG-23:
Big version: Width: 1024 Height: 683 File size: 1084kb
MiG-23

MiG-29:
Big version: Width: 1024 Height: 685 File size: 973kb
Mig-29

Many thanks!

The first one is a Mig-23ML. The second one is a standard Mig-29.

I would say more like abandoned than stored.

Correct. Apparently the tow tractor left its spare tire in from of the Mig-29.

Hence my use of " ".  wink

This was an interesting little collection of planes in the middle of nowhere, or Dolgoe Ledovo as the Russians call it.

By my count, right to left, there are 7 Mig-21s, 1 Mi-24. 3 Mig-29s, not sure what these two are but they only have one engine, and the last one is possibly a Mig-23 with one wing. Or maybe I only see one wing because the picture quality is low.

It does not appear to have the two airplanes pictured in your first post here, all of the Mig-29s have their radomes attached, and the airplane to the left of the Mig-23 is camo. In you pic of the Mig-23ML, the airplane next to it is grey and appears to be the tail of another Mig-23.

The three planes to the left are all Mig-23s. Two have the wings swept forward. The Mig-29s may or may not have the radome attached. It could be an older photo and the 29 lost the radome recently. It could be the way the shadows are that the shadow look like a radome but it's not.

Thanks, that is what I thought they could be, but I was not 100% sure.

If you look at the paint scemes and use the silver MiG-23 as a reference, the -29 in the photo should be middle one(can see one more -29 and the silver -23 behind it), and the camo -23 is the middle of the three, or leftmost with the wings forward.

Do we know if the left most Mig-23, the one with the wings fully swept is actually missing the right wing, or is it just a bad picture (or my eyes)?

I took those photos just last week, but I have no idea how old the Google Earth image is. What I can tell you is, none of the planes there have moved in a long time.

Unfortunately, we were told they were due to be scrapped soon, so they won't be there much longer.

Yes and yes.

It did in fact have a full complement of wings.

Quoting Jackonicko (Reply 9):

Very good, and tallies with my photos. Where did you get the info?

That might be tough. IIRC, that was one of the two nose-to-tail. I don't think I've got a shot of that one.
