2 French Rafales Down?

Thu Sep 24, 2009 7:27 pm

There's a short breaking news on an italian newsite:

"2 French Rafales crashed in the sea some 50km east of Perpignan tonight at around 6pm local time. Planes took off from carrier Charles De Gaulle, one pilot bailed out and has been rescued, another one is missing."

That if confirmed would be very sad news, anyone knows more?

The German press agency DPA has the same information, except 30 km east from Perpignan and search going on for second pilot, and says this is a French Defence Ministry announcement.

Yes sadly confirmed. Some 30km off the coast of Perpignan. 1 pilot rescued, still searching for the other one.

I hope they find the second pilot soon, and alive. It is dark in that part of the world now, which makes finding him in that big sea even harder.

Yep, finger crossed for the pilot!
Don't fighter pilots have a locator beacon of some sort on their flight equipment so they can be found also at night and in bad weather?

The French navy is talking about an in flight collision. Of course, to put down 2 planes at the same time, it couldn't be something else.

Question is, did the 2nd pilot managed to eject?

This would be the second in-flight collision for the french aeronavale in recent years...
The last one was start of october 2008, between two SEM - Super Etendard Modernise, flying as a formation of 4 from Landivisau.

one pilot had managed to eject but the second one hadn't and died in the accident.

Very sad news, this is the third loss of a Rafale IIRC.

Fingers crossed for the pilot still missing!

Latest news are:
- The two pilots were not regular French Navy airmen but test pilots,
- They flew the latest version of the Rafale, the one offered to Brasil,
- A piece of a wing was picked-up by a French Navy boat 40 km from where the first pilot was rescued,
- The signal of both beacons has now been acquired,
- Search continues to try and find the second pilot,
- It is the French Navy intention to locate the planes.

I'm sad to report that the search for the second pilot has been called off.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and colleagues.

How sad that one human life and 2x $90 million works of human effort have gone to the bottom of the sea. That's really a large accident affecting a lot of people.

The black box of the Rafale whose pilot died, has been located by the French Navy. Recovery from the 700 m depth will be tried on October 23rd with a remotely controlled vehicle (ROV). The weather conditions are not too good.
The other Rafale has also been located thanks to its beacon.

The French Defense Minister Morin, while o/b the aircraft carrier "Charles-de-Gaulle", indicated that the crash of the two Rafales was most probably due to pilot mistake. He also said that 10 earlier Rafales which are presently cocooned, will be re-activated after upgrade.

It seems like it must have been a collision whilst the two aircraft were in formation or maneuvering in close proximity to each other, ... they might even have been dog-fighting.
