What Plane Does The First Lady Use?

Fri Oct 02, 2009 1:10 pm

Was not able to find this on here... here it is.. When the first lady travels (without the president) what plane does she use? For example, Ms. Obama went ahead of the president (for the olympic bid) but she will fly back with him. And what of the first children... I know they are young now but as first children do they have use of a plane?

The First Lady uses one of the Boeing 757's at Andrews AFB for government officials. These are the planes Hilary Clinton uses, DEfense Sec. Gates and congressional delegations.

It depends on where she is going, what the lift needs are, etc. She often uses one of the Gulfstreams. The C-32 she used this time was, presumably, because she was bringing a larger delegation and based on the distance of the trip (not necessarily range of the airplane per se, but more for comfort level). When she goes up to NYC, for example, or other travels domestically I know she often just uses one of the G's (C-20 or C-37). Same applies for the SecDef, SecState, etc. In fact, going into theater, the SecDef usually travels abroad in one of the palletized C-17's; they roll in a pallet that has was essentially is a prefab office. There are a few photos on Google of it. It's pretty cool.

Congressional delegations traveling abroad on official business rarely, if ever, travel on the C-32's. Usually they are on one of the G's or the C-40's (the BBJ).

I did one tour at the 89th. It is a juggling match trying to meet the demands that they have for those airplanes.

The C-32 would have been a good opportunity to carry the some of the advance staff in one trip and avoid having to send another plane, or charter one.

Danish TV clearly showed Michelle Obama step off a C-32 at CPH.

Yes, she can use the C-20, C-32A, C-37, or C-40B. But the SOS and sometimes the SOD use the C-32Bs, without the USAF markings, and has RR engines.

Yes, they do have aux tanks in both baggage compartments, but I don't know the total capacity of how much additional range they provide. If I were to guess, and this is only a guess, it would provide enough fuel to increase the range to 6,000 nm-6,500 nm. Remember both the C-32A/B were built, or upgraded to the B-757-200ER weight class and have the blended winglets.

The C-32Bs do not have any winglets installed.

Back in my day it depended on who was the FLOTUS, Nancy had a big staff and had her own agenda or pet projects she championed so when she requested airlift it was usally a C-137, nothing smaller than a C-9. Barbara was always with POTUS 41 and when she did fly alone its was a C-20 and with a smaller staff. The current FLOTUS if reports are to believed is she has a huge paid staff almost as big as the West wings and requires a C-32 or C-40. Don't forget Madamm Speaker likes to get back to SFO in one flight from ADW with her staff so she gets a C-32 or C-40. I think next time it would be cost beneficial to elect Speaker someone from Virginia or Maryland maybe Delaware or Pennslyvania. Knowing our luck the next one will be from Alaska or Hawaii or maybe Guam becomes a state with all the milcon money being spent there and will have to buy a 747-800 or a VIP capsule in the next new tanker. Didn't the congress get some bad press of adding acft to the fleet with one of those midnight admendments?
I would help you but it is not in the contract

There is also an unmarked C-32 (military tail number), with Pratts also, it is at ADW a lot, usually parks 10 or 9 row and doesn't stay long.

Correct, the blue and white A's have had the mod, I've seen the usual unmarked RR powered 57 and a bunch of times and a PW powered unmarked 57 also, neither with winglets. I haven't seen the unmarked PW 57 in some time, maybe it was some lease deal for a short period.

Which aircraft does the TOTUS travel on? (Teleprompter of the United States).

I'm really glad they can fly around on GV's all day on the taxpayer's nickel, but when a money-making, tax paying corporation does it, suddenly it's evil.

That C-32B is usually assigned to the State Department, used when SoS is bumping around and also for DoS quick reaction teams in disasters. It may be in the South Pacific/Indonesia/Samoa/Philippines after the disasters int he past month. Spent a lot of time parked when SoS broke her elbow and stopped flying for a time recently.

Don't think it's a short term lease as it has been operated a good number of years already. There were 2. 00-9001 (ln 611) and 02-4452 (ln 523). They are both RR powered though, the C-32As are PW powered.
