Looking For P&W R-1340 To Buy For Texan

Mon Oct 05, 2009 9:33 am

Hi

Would you happen to have a spare Texan engine available for sale? If not, do you know the best places(s) to look for one?

Thanks in advance for any guidance.

Apparently there is one for sale in WA state, with 74 hours SMOH, on this site, no price listed;

Additionally, Covington Aircraft Radial Engine Division of Covington Aviation rebuilds R-1340s, I assume you need to have one that needs to be rebuilt and send it to them. But, they may also sell newly rebuilt engines. My guess would be around $40,000 plus shipping.

Sorry, that is the best I can do, as I don't have a spare R-1340 hanging around my house.

I know that an R-1830 is not an R-1340.

But I also know that the Foreningen for Flyvende Museumsfly (FFFM or Danish association of flying museum planes) a few years back bought a rebuilt R-1830 (for DC-3) somewhere in the US at $60k.

Following an engine failure it was bought as replacement of the only spare engine on stock, and today it is still stored in the dry, sealed, nitrogen filled container in which it was delivered.

That at least indicates that $40k, as indicated by KC135TopBoom, might be a fair price for a 1340.

I know no more. But sure you are welcome to contact the chairman Mrs. Susanne Broegger at
3fm (at) dc3vennerne.dk for detailed information about where and how. And where 1830's were for sale a 1340 could easily be for sale as well.

Thanks very much for your help. Sadly I don't happen to have a Texan to restore so I'll pass your info on to the guy who does.

Further to this comment which was right off the top of my head, it appears according to Covingtons website that the R-1340 is still being used a lot in cropspraying aircraft in the USA. ...Rather intriguing as the engine was designed and first run in 1925 and last produced by Pratt & Whitney in 1960.
