It says it is a UAE plane but the marking look mysteriously like the Arizona Air National Guard. I haven't seen a US F-16 with conformal tanks before so that confuses me to. Any ideas what is up?

Now this picture by the same photographer is definitely a UAE F-16

There appear to be 7 F-16E Block 60 owned by the UAEAF that are assigned to the 148fs of the AZ ANG.
Is this perhaps to maintain a cadre of instructor pilots to assist with the training of UAEAF pilots or to simplify the operation of UAE aircraft in CONUS for training purposes?

Cheers

The latter. Luftwaffe F-4s that operated out of Holloman had USAF markings, I'm not sure about the Dutch F-16s out of Ohio, or the Singapore F-16s out of Luke anf Idaho.

The 148thFS is part of the 162ndFW which is actually just a training wing operating out of Tuscon IAP. Also in the 162ndFW is the 152ndFS operating block 42 F-16C/D's, the 195thFS operating perhaps the oldest F-16's left in the US in block 25 F-16C/D's, and then there is AATC, a test unit for the Guard and Reserve operating block 25/32 F-16C/D's.

The 148th is a training squadron for the UAE F-16E/F's and are flown by both USAF and UAE pilots. While I would imagine some if not most of the aircraft have not even been to the UAE yet, that's where they will all eventually go because they paid for them, not the US or the USAF. The US offers these sorts of deals when foreign Air Forces elect to buy US aircraft.

The CFT's are horrible looking, but the AESA radars and GE F110's with 32.5k pounds of thrust have to be a blast!

there was a time when planes from those few allied nations which were "permanently" CONUS based could only have US markings. IIRC Singapore were allowed in the last few years to have national markings and the Germans also. The Taiwanese block 20s at Luke still have US markings - but then they don't exist as a nation officially either!
