Indian Air Force To Buy Used 744's

Mon Nov 23, 2009 1:25 am

Just read in the latest weekly report from atdb.org that the Indian Air Force will be buying 3 used 747-437 from Air-India. No indication on use: cargo conversion, VIP or role.
I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

Wow, great if true. Very surprising. Nice if they found a new home so soon, well, not a totally new home. Somehow the owners in the background remain the same.
As 3 VIP 744s sounds unbelievable to me I guess its highly likely they´ll be converted to freighters, maybe one being retained as VIP transport, not more.

Great news for AI as well as they will have some badly needed liquidity....even after the Governement support

If they wanted B-744Fs, doesn't AF have some for sale? KL I believe has the B-744C for sale, too. Me thinks these will be VIP airplanes.

I thought I read in CivAv that Air India was considering retiring some of their 744s, so it might just be a case that the Indian Air Force "buying local" to support AI.

AI sold the two 747-337M aircraft to early.(one already broke up for spares.)
These two would have been the ideal candidates for the Indian Air Force :
Relative very cheap 747-300combi aircraft (low investment), easy to convert to freighter, with CF-6-80C2B1 engines.
IMO a missed opportunity.

Operating a twin over the ocean, you're always one engine failure from a total emergency.

Is there a possibility they will be converted to tanker/freighter configuration? Does India's Air Force need more capable tankers?

If it's watery enough, you could use something like Evergreen's "FireBomber" delivery system.  Silly

The IAF is in the process of placing an order for A330MRTTs for this role.

The IAF is in the process of placing an order for A330MRTTs for this role.

As I understand it, the A-330MRTT won out over the Il-78 for the tanker, but no order has been submitted, yet. It is sort of like the Polish deal where a new tanker is selected, but no order has come, yet.

If they convert these 3 B-747-400s into KC-744s, they will not need the A-330MRTTs. In the early 1970s, Boeing converted the IIAF KC-741s. They also used their prototype B-747 as a demostrator tanker (equipped with a KC-135 Boom) to the USAF during the ATCA compitition.

So, Boeing could do these conversions, then again, so can IAI.

Have they outgrown this already?

The IAF had been borrowing the AI 744s for VIP duties (i.e. for the PM & President's foreign tours) while they were in operation. After AI retired them, IAF must have decided to buy them off AI.

Two can be justified (one for backup), but why they need three is beyond me.

I'm betting that the PM's entourage will now expand to TWO 747's with one kept as back-up!

How many seats would a reconfiguered former AI B-747-400 have in a VIP role for the IAF? IIRC, the USAF VC-25As only seat about 75 passengers, the rest is used for rest areas for the POTUS, conference rooms, and office space. There is also a large full kitchen aboard.

In that picture it looks like most of the seats in that area have been removed. Will the IAF have a new designation for these and what will the tail numbers become? Will there be a communications suit like the VC-25A has? Is AI going to do all the maintenance on them, and who is going to do the conversions?
