Strange Sightings Over The West Midlands (UK)...

Sat Dec 05, 2009 10:04 am

Being more of a civil aviation nutter this is my first post in this section so please bear with me!!

I live in a small city called Redditch near Birmingham in the United Kingdom and at about 1450 very low, i would say about 2,000ft I saw a aircraft. Now im no good with military a/c however this was kinda scary as it was very unusual. Over the past few days I have seen several low flying planes circle around my home at night.

Anyway I think that the plane was this:

Why was it flying so low (and slow)? Although my #1 question was why was it here??

Thanks  Smile

It may have been flying about from Mildenhall or Lakenheath, because they're both UK bases leased to the USAF.

Why it was flying over Reddich, I have no idea.

I don't understand what the USAF has to do with it. The RAF currently operates 6 C-17s, and is most likely on of those.

Hello T8KE0FF,

It was probably one of the RAF ones. They are regular visitors to BHX, often transferring injured troops from Afghanistan to hospital in Birmingham. If they then return to Brize, they will possibly be transiting at relatively low altitudes as it is not that far by air.

Best regards,

Jim
Erm, is this thing on?

I also saw the said C-17. I live near the Royal College of Defence Medicine in Selly Oak hospital. I believe the RAF were performing a fly-by over the hospital as they occasionally do.

I saw the picture and automatically assumed it was a USAF one.... my bad. I forgot the RAF operated them, but I'm not too into military stuff if I'm honest.

Hi Marshall !
Ironically I also live in Redditch... The Globemasters usually take an approach into Birmingham low and slow over the town (usually out over Astwood Bank - Parallal to the M40 - then Parallal to the M42 and then over the M42 and into BHX)
They park at Elmdon and are mostly troop movement flights bringing home injured troops. They usually use one of the hospitals in Selly Oak (The QE if im correct)
Anyway, I've seen these low and slow about... hmmm.. 4 times ? I work in Edgbaston and sometimes they take an approach over my office also.
I've also seen a VC10 landing into BHX and park up at Elmdon.. that was pretty cool.
And yes, they are RAF and not USAF.

Hope this helps !
