A400M First Flight Dec 11th

Wed Dec 09, 2009 12:22 pm

As confirmed by Airbus Military today:

http://www.flightglobal.com/articles...400m-first-flight-this-friday.html

(as the previous thread had been drifting off-topic and was at 200 replies anyway, I think it's worth starting a new, dedicated thread to comment all the happenings immediately before, during and after the first flight).

Good luck to the Airbus Military flight test team!

Finally, can't await to see those huge props flying high.

10 o'clock it is on friday, no?

And even more important: Maybe the b...sh.. beating of the other thread comes to a stop when this thing flies.  Yeah sure

Arm chair strategists and engineers are always available to beat up a new airplane. This is especially true during the design and development stage. As has been said before, once the bird gets into service, all that stuff is forgotten and what the plane is doing in operation becomes the topic of discussion. My sincere hope is that the A400M does very well and meets and even excedes expectations.
Dare to dream; dream big!

Current METAR is CAVOK.

TAF for this morning: LEZL 110200Z 1103/1112 04004KT CAVOK TEMPO 1103/1109 7000 PROB30 TEMPO 1104/1107 0900 FG BKN005

Some TEMPO morning fog which probably won't show up and if it does it should clear up before mid day, CAVOK otherwise.

I had the honour to work with a supplier for the program 2007 & 2008 - its just a fatanstic aircraft and will be an incredible step forward for the forces!

She looks and sounds great! Thousend times more of a beauty then the Herc or the C-17 IMO.

Apart from that i am pretty sure Airbus will hit the specs or even overdeliver on this incredible achievement.

You will agree as someone "involved" that anyone claiming the A400 is just a bigger C-130 and not a technology leap has not the slightes idea from what he's talking from.

This plane is worth for to wait and will be from great value for the air forces.

Guess all naysayer and bashers of this program will have a bad time this day. Big grin

Congratulations EADS!

Or these nay-sayers are just feeling that there favorites are being well surpassed by newer technology planes coming out of different countries then the US. We have seen it (and are still seeing it) when the A380 took to the skies. Why should this one be different?  Wink

New technology planes should of course be better a considerable margin, otherwise they better had not even developed a new plane. I am sure in the end it will be a superior aircraft for the missions it is designed to do.  Wink

She flies!

Congrats to everyone! It's been a rough development phase, but this is nevertheless a great achievement! This event culminates a phase and begins another, very exciting one, that of testing the actual airplane up to certification and EIS.

It's going to be a very intense flight test program with many challenges ahead:

- opening up the flight envelope of a design that has lots of firsts for Airbus (first T-tail configuration, most powerful props in the West, first large military transport, ...)
- military and civil certification
- ability to refuel and be refueled, at the two extremes of the flight envelope
- operations from unprepared airstrips
- high & low altitude airdrop
- terrain following flight
- etc etc

It will surely be an interesting flight test campaign!

and wow! - Doesn't she look like a C-17 from the rear (about 50secs into the youtube vid)

..and I gotta admit, there's something venting there by No1.

I'm sure it would've turned around and landed though if something untowards happned.

..or being a first flight would they????.....

Condensation from the wing tip vortices?

On the picture you posted you can see it originating from the right wingtip as well.

Or maybe they topped it off the night before and there was some expansion venting, but I doubt they would do the first flight with full fuel, would they?

Funny to listen to all those pre-recorded statements of employees - the Spaniards speak Spanish, the French French and the British English - only the Germans speak, for some funny reason, English rather than German (and mostly with a thick accent that is...)

The same thing is running again as I write. I'd say it's a replay.

The smoke Zeke pointed out, seen during the take off, is gone in the in flight pictures.

Recorded after the T/O I hope (they talk about how seeing it flying is emotional). Before the T/O, there was some interviews too, with all people speaking English, French, Spaniards etc., and they all had a terrible accent, it's an embarrassment.

The in flight footage they are showing now is amazing. I see they have the gear up. Will they retract the flaps this sortie?

What is the chase aircraft? Is it the good old Airbus Corvette?
I see the Spanish AF dispatched an F-18 for the occasion. Nice touch.

Yes, I think on the 18th. IIRC, 3 test a/c will be assigned to TLS, and 2 to SVQ. I think MSN2 will be based in SVQ. Looks like they won't be making any visit to XFW in the foreseeable future, so I guess I'll have to go down to TLS sometime to get a look... I've seen those huge props at Le Bourget and they dwarf anything else out there - must be quite a thing to hear them running!

From what I could see, they flew with a couple of different flap settings. It looked like they were extended a lot on one occasion and fully retracted on one.

Yes we saw the Corvette. In fact some time ago we even saw it come back and leave again (or maybe it was a second one ? I didn't see a refuel).

I would have preferred an Eurofighter or a Rafale in lieu of the F-18  Embarrassment
