Air Force One To Hawaii

Thu Dec 24, 2009 6:48 pm

Just wondering when did Air Force One leave for Hawaii. The reason I ask is because I was wondering if they would fly over the SF bay area and if they do I would like to see if I can see it.

I thought Obama was delaying his Hawaii vacation until he got his health care bill. Is that not true? The health care bill is now in the Senate/House "Conference" Committee, hammering out the differences.

I have a buddy who is an ATC in Hawaii, and he is indeed there. In fact he posted several pictures of the actual street where Obama is staying and the security around the area.

Okay so Air Force One touched down yesterday, (12/24/09) shortly before 1500 hrs. local time, Hawaii. Anyone know if both VC "sisters" are here? Or is it just one?

From what I saw, only 1 VC-25 is here. I don't think they use both when the destination is in the U.S. I was stuck on the ramp when GWB visited in 2006 and only 1 VC-25 was here. Even when GWB stopped over at HIK for 4 hours on his way back from the APEC meeting in Australia in 2007, only 1 VC-25 landed.

Got a shot of AF1 landing at 14:47 and taxiing to HIK at 14:53, but couldn't see the tail number. Posted the pictures on the HNL RareBirds blog.

However, there is an E-4B that stopped in ITO today.

I don't think both fly into the same airport, for distribution of assets. Say one of the VC's was attacked, or the airport unreachable, they can ferry the president to another VC nearby. I beleive that on some past european trips AF1 would land at the close civilian airport where he was going, and the backup would land at a nearby military base.

As far as I have been told by family (Air Force), that US destinations only one a/c will go. Occasionally a C-32 (B757) will be on hand. In the case of Obama visiting San Francisco a few months back the C-32 only flew in when AF1 arrived with a minor maintenance issue.

2 E4s were in ITO. I can see one being here since POTUS was on Oahu, but two?? Could they have been here for something else?

How long were they there? From what I read of the blog, it sounds like one was on site, then the second one replaced it - could have just been the normal crew rotation...IIRC, they pull a week-long tour before the next crew replaces them, and both aircraft happened to be on the ground at the same time.

Thanks Moose, I agree but I thinking it would have been cheaper to fly them all the way out here either commercial or on a smaller aircraft.

I don't remember very many times they would send a crew commercial (unless we were picking up a plane out of depot or something). You would have a bunch of gear, pubs, etc. to bring along, and with an airplane like the E-4, the crew probably carries classified materials that you wouldn't want to stuff in the overhead...also, they do need to fly a certain number of sorties to maintain proficiency, so it serves as a training mission as well as repositioning flight.

I guess they could send them as pax on another flight, but unless you happened to have a cargo/pax flight heading between the right places, you end up tasking another aircraft/crew for the trip, and probably don't save very much if anything that way.
