Some stunning highres pictures of the first December testflights of NASA/DASA SOFIA with telescope installed and open door:

Interesting pictures. I didn't know this conversion involved fuselage widening and a sliding internal door....very trick of them...

Good that they saved another classic 747SP airplane too.

I have had the chance to see this bad boy at Dryden a few times and talk to some of the engineers. The engineering is amazing and it's a beauty to see. NASA really bought a dog of a plane (not the model but the exact a/c, it was used and abused in its life as a commercial a/c) and did some great work to make it an airborne telescope. A fun a/c
to follow!

Great pictures, thanks for sharing. On a bit of a sidenote I like that in picture 76 you can see an SR-71 right above the cockpit of the 747 (and an F-104, A-7, F-8).  Smile
