SDO Launch Vs Sundog Video. Ever Before?

Fri Feb 12, 2010 11:52 pm

Has anyone else seen the video of the SDO launch destroying a sundog in a cirrus cloud?
Some cool shockwaves rippling through the cloud as the rocket passed through.

My question, in addition to "Isn't that cool?", is whether this effect has been seen/filmed before.

I've never seen it before but that is cool as hell! It was exactly like water ripples... but in a cloud. And what is SDO and what is Sundog?

Quoting HaveBlue (Reply 1):

The SDO is the Solar Dynamics Observatory, which is what was being launched.
A sundog is that rainbow colored bright spot in a cirrus cloud to the side of the sun. It's caused by flat ice crystals which float more or less aligned the same. When the rocket's shock wave passed through the cloud this alignment was destroyed which also killed the sundog.

That "spike" effect at about 11 o'clock of the rocket as it passed through? I have no idea what that was!

Ahh thanks for the explanation, it was way too late and I was way too tired to Google those terms. Pretty fantastic video imo.
