MiG-29s From Russia (with Love)

Fri May 14, 2010 6:10 pm

The first public announcement that Russia is supplying Syria with MiG-29s just came to the fore.....

http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp...ALeqM5hKYoEcT7HFtKUQx5tTZ_M0AJzaqQ

Quote:
"MOSCOW — Russia is supplying Syria with warplanes, armoured vehicles and air defence systems under existing contracts, ITAR-Tass news agency quoted the head of the country's state military agency as saying.

Mikhail Dmitriyev, head of the Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation, said Russia was selling Syria MiG-29 fighter jets, Pantsir short-range air defence systems and armoured vehicles."

Which variant?

The Syrians must make sure that the MiG-29s are not the ones rejected by Algeria.    BTW, what happened to their rumoured MiG-31 order?.....

DID said the fighters would be MiG-29SMTs.....

Quote:
"The most likely variant involved would be the MiG-29SMT, which is serving in Russia’s air force via an upgrade program."

Also, that the MiG-31E deal did not progress.....

The rejected Algerian Mig-29s are now operated by the Russian air force and a bunch of them even took part in the recent parade.

I'm not an expert on fighter jets, but the photo in the thread starter's link looks like an Su-27/31 not a MIG-29...am I wrong?

Definitely a MiG-29, no wing-tip rails or stinger visible (both Flanker specific) on the top two aircraft. The lower aircraft is a MiG-31, the twin seat cockpit gives it away.

I think Ozair is correct! The reference is to the link, not the photos posted in the thread. The link includes a photo of "Mig-29s" that have a stinger, and wing-tip rails.....my vote, Su-27 variant..

Cheers!

Correct, linked shot are Su-27s, likely three Su-27UB two seat trainers and one Su-27 single seat.

It looks like the Russian Knights display team.

Further to the above, Defense-Aerospace again reports that Russia is denying the MiG-31 sale to Syria.....

Sorry, subscribers only. Whoever has access to the full report can please provide the missing details.

Found a short excerpt.....

http://www.airforcesmonthly.com/view_news.asp?ID=2663

Quote:
Syria won't get the MiG-31, says Russia.

"October 28: Russian news agency RIA Novosti reports that the state-run arms exporter Rosoboronexport has confirmed there is no contract to supply MiG-31 Foxhound fighter jets to Syria.

'The existence of a contract on the delivery of MiG-31 interceptors to Syria is a journalistic hoax,' said Rosoboronexport General Director Anatoly Isaykin at the Euronaval 2010 exhibition in Paris."
