Space Shuttle Takeoff Sequence As Seen By Me.

Wed May 19, 2010 12:23 am

Hi Guys,

We had a launch last Friday and now that the program is winding down there is a lot of interest. I picked 10 representative shots and made a web gallery around them. The pictures and details can be seen here:

http://www.atapattu.net/atapattu00.html

I thought some of you may be interested in seeing them as it is highly unlikely any of these will ever make the database becuase of various requirements that will shoot them down. I plan to add more galleries devoted to different facets such as the orbiters, processing and missions. Hope you enjoy them.
Feel free to drop me an email and I will keep you informed off updates.

To start the thread off, I thought I would add one pic. The rest can be seen from the link above.

I would 've liked to witness a launch in real, but I guess I am running out of time (because I can't afford it right now...)

Best regards,

Walter

Great pictures, thanks for sharing! Catching the SRB's seperating was cool. Didn't know they climbed another 40 miles upwards after seperation before descending til I read your notes on the photos. Pretty cool.

Thanks! Just wanted to clear something up. The SRB climb to approx 40 miles total (they separate at about 27 miles (+ - ) ) from the rest of the stack. So in they tack on about 13 miles after booster sep. Hope that clears it up.

I will be uploading STS-123 (march 2008) night launch picture gallery later on today.

Beautiful pictures!

How do you get so close to the pad? Do you work for NASA or have you got special accreditation from them?

It is sad to think that these wonderful Shuttle Launches will be part of history very soon.
There was a better way to fly it was called Concorde

Great photos as usual from Suresh.
I almost got some myself a while ago, and this is how my trip turned out:

I happened to be visiting a friend in Gainesville back in Nov.'81 and on the evening of the 11th we drove down to Titusville, found a good parkingspot on a dock with a great view across the Indian River. The feeling was quite intense, seeing the Space Shuttle (Columbia) bathed in white lights, lots of activity in the air and other people that also joined us on the dock. It turned out to become an all night party and any sleep in the 280ZX was just about impossible....

When dawn came I set up my gear, a Nikon FE /MD12 motordrive behind a 500mm reflex on a tripod and waited.....
With just a few moments to go, the cuntdown was stopped and we heard on the radio that the launch was scrubbed due to some computer-problems.
Not knowing how long the hold was going to last, we decided to leave    and took a nice drive up to St. Augustine.
-But that's a different story

Great photos! However, I find the copyright info in top right-hand corner simply waaay too big and thus annoying.

Thanks! Unfortunately, I have had too many photos used for commercial purposes without any credit or reimbursement (i.e. outright stealing). Actually, I have been advised by other photographers that I should move the watermark to the center and shrink the picture size. I have not done that.

Notice how the Smithsonian does their watermarking (and small size of image).

sample image.

Thank you Walter for the support!

I have more and will try and add as time goes by. It is very time consuming to do it right. I just don't want to dump the contents of my camera cards. I literally shoot thousands on any given day with the orbiter.

I will update when i do.

As I looked at the images of Atlantis returning all I could think of was, "Welcome home darling."

Thanks for sharing your incredible pictures with us.

I especially like #7 in the "Atlantis under tow" gallery and and imagine how cool it would be to be standing where the kid in the blue shirt is in #7 in the "Atlantis landing" gallery.

Thanks for the feedback! I love to share this with space fans so it is quite nice to see the program appreciated. It is going to be hard as we reach the end of an era. I guess this is some kinda of therapy!

I have put more galleries (http://www.atapattu.net/sts123landing/atapattu00.html)
up since i put this thread. Am also going to be adding some up close stuff from the launch pad 39B that were part of this sequence below. Hopefully,I will have that up by tomorrow.
