Choose Wakeup Songs For Last Space Shuttle Flights

Tue Aug 24, 2010 10:23 pm

The wakeup song has been a part of the space program since the days of the Apollo missions, and now NASA is giving you two chances to be a part of this history! We need your help selecting wakeup songs to be played during the final missions of the Space Shuttle Program!

Before I even looked at it, I was thinking of Beautiful Day by U2, and sure enough, it was on the list.

"Countdown" by Rush is currently winning the contest - with over 46,000 votes.

Damn, what a sad day it's going to be when the shuttle program ends.

"Countdown" by Rush was written after the band was invited to witness the launch of STS-1 and the Space Shuttle Columbia. The video (on youtube) has plenty of footage of the launch as well.

The album Signals has this on it.

"Dedicated with thanks to the astronauts Young & Crippen and all the people of NASA for their inspiration and cooperation"

In a strange twist of fate, it was played as the wake-up song on Columbia's last successful mission STS-109 to work on the Hubble space telescope.

"Scorching blast of golden fire
As it slowly leaves the ground
Tears away with a mighty force
The air is shattered by the awesome sound

Like a pillar of cloud
The smoke lingers high in the air
In fascination
With the eyes of the world
We stare..."

If there ever was a song for the final mission, this is it.

Over the Rainbow (by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole) 3,621 Votes - 1.0%

Iz has now gone... somewhere over the rainbow where bluebirds fly and dreams do come true....
There was a better way to fly it was called Concorde

When Sweden's first astronaut first went into space on STS-116 I was listening to a lot of David Bowie. Unfortunately, neither Starman nor Space Oddity are listed so I'll vote for Foo Fighters.

On a somewhat unrelated subject, does anyone know what time of the day/night STS-135 will launch?

While I love many of the wonderful themes from the various Star Trek shows and movies, I would *not* want to hear the theme from TOS in the morning--especially if it really was a wakeup call.

Lots of good stuff. I like "Beautiful Day," "Start Me Up," and "What a Wonderful World," but I voted for "Somewhere Over the Rainbow."
