ATTN: MCO Spotters And Military Fans

Mon Oct 25, 2010 9:39 pm

We have the Air Tanker Convention at the Mariott again this year.

Like last time there were regular arrivals of C-130s, C-5s, C-17s, KC-135s, KC-10s as well as smaller transport types like C-12, C-20s, UC-35s etc.

I believe last time there was the Civilian 707 and DC-10 tanker here too. Unfortunately I didn't see it last time because I was up north.

Some of the arrivals happen THIS wednesday, but I think the bulk of the arrivals happen Thursday with the heavies, they arrive every 30-60 minutes, drop off whatever they are dropping off then they depart. Sunday the aircraft return to pick up whatever or whoever they have to pick up

The Thunderbird's are to do a fly over of Walt Disney World tomorrow Oct 26th at around 1515. They are in an air show at Cocoa Beach this weekend.

That is cool to know. I wasn't aware they would be doing that but it does make for a great photo for their 2011 calenders if they made them yet.

I wish I could go to Cocoa, but I gotta work Sat and Sun, so I am going to miss these tankers and the airshow.

This is huge! If you love C-5's C-17's KC-10s KC135's and anything else heavy military, this is your weekend! A constant flow of large aircraft will arrive..They come from all over the world..there were so many C-130s last time, I lost count...In most cases the acft taxi to the gemeral aviation ramp, leave the engines running drop a few passengers off and go right out again....It absolutely amazing!! Its the military equivelent to a major airline hub....close to a hundred plus movements....the heavy metal will stick around for the long weekend....Cant wait!

Crownvic, didn't the civilian 707 tanker and DC-10 come too last time? I thought I remember reading it on here.

I'm trying to build up my military serial collection in my photos so I am also happy to see some of the smaller military planes too. I would love to get some C-5s though here.

I seen a couple all white G-IVs (which could have been C-20s)and a G-V fly over as well as a couple Beech 400s (which could have been T-1 Jayhawks) because there is nothing on flightaware for them.

Air Force 2 was here earlier today as well as some military transports bringing in Director of Homeland Security and other important cabinet officials.

Crownvic, I know you are into the heavies, but were there a lot of smaller military transports during this too like C-27s etc? Any fighter aircraft?

Any chance of foreign military movements or is this strictly U.S. military? I know Wednesday we are supposed to be getting some operations from overseas, but I think they are all coming from U.S. bases. I am hoping to see maybe an RAF Tristar refueler or a VC-10 refueler or someone bringing in an A330 (KC-45) refueler, but this isn't likely is it?

Air Force C-40C serial # 05-0932 (this is a 737G painted like Air Force One) landed at 4:08p
Navy UC-12 (King Air 200) buno 161502 landed at 5:08p

NASCARAirforce, Crownvic, thanks for the heads up! Is there a particular time on Sunday that there will be a lot of movements? I am flying out of MCO around 1:30PM. Is it worth getting to the airport early on Sunday?

I'm not sure which time will be the busiest Sunday, today I would say the peak movements were 11a-12p, then another bunch around 2p-3p

Depends what airside you are flying out of. You won't be able to see these ops from AS 2 or 4 since everything is on the west ramp and using 18R

Movements today.

Started around 8am with back to back C-17s

I went to nearby park and got a KC-135 out of NC around 8:30, followed by a DHL DC-8, so it was cool to see a 707 and DC-8 just 2 min from each other.

A C-17 came in around 9am

Then there were 4 C-130s that came in between 10:00 and 10:40

Around 11am a couple KC-10s came in and the C-40 took off along with a couple C-130s

I would say by type today either watching from roof or GOAA cameras:

4 KC-10s
5-6 KC-135s
too many C-130s to count, but I would say somewhere between 15-20, even one of the Antartic ones with the orange tail and skis
I would say about 15 or so C-17s
2 C-20s (military Gulfstream 3s) one in blue and white colors, the other one all gray
2 C-21s (military Lear 35s)
5 T-1 Jayhawks (Military Beech 400s) all came in one after each other

The T-1s, the C-20s and one C-17 is still parked at MCO as I write this, everything else departed

What is the point of this Air Tanker Convention? Does it happen every year? Is it always in MCO? That's a lot of big aircraft for one day!

It alternates between Orlando and Nashville. Orlando gets it in even years, Nashville in odd years. Nashville has covered it fairly well over the last several years. (Search for "airlift tanker association" in the search box above)

Wondering if we will ever see photos of the arrivals/departures from Orlando on a.net...

Hmmm I checked out the website but I don't quite understand what this Association is about or why they are meeting and have so much heavy metal coming in to drop off people.

I don't recall Orlando having it in 2008. Orlando had it back in 2006 though.

I have posted my pictures on a different site, but all of my Sunday return arrivals are up. I will have them posted shortly on our sister site myaviation.net.

Mostly 18R, a couple C-17s were lined up for 18R but made last minute switches to 18L for following too close to other aircraft.

yes the Omega 707 and DC-10 were here all weekend...

We only had the DC-10 in 2006.

The 707 you're thinking of was Travolta.
