Which KC-135 Is This?

Sat Jan 29, 2011 9:04 pm

I snapped this KC-135 at Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX/KPHX) back in early 2006. I'm struggling to work out what the serial is.

It looks like 71466, which would make it 57-1466, except the KC-135 with that serial was never built. Anyone know what the full serial is? Thanks!

Well... According to the Scramble DB, 57-1466 was built as a KC-135A, flying with the 7th BW. However, this plane was written off March 8, 1960, so it seems unlikely you saw this plane at PHX...

Searching trough the whole KC-135 production list didn't provide me with an alternative, so I see your struggle. I'm just as puzzled.

Cheers!

I believe the tail number reads 71456, which would make her # 57-1456.

I would bet on this: KC-135R s/n 57-1486 is assigned to the 197 ARS of the AZ ANG.

The tail number is more than clearly 71466 imo. Absolutely not a 56 as I can see the closed back, and not 86 as you can see both the last 2 numbers are identical.

Here you go. I don't think it will be much help though due to the heat haze.

If 57-1466 was written off, is it possible this tail number was painted incorrectly when the plane went in for paint?

No, that is not possible. The USAF does have a history of swapping tail numbers on some aircraft, the SR-71s did it many times. But in the end, the original tail numbers always ended up painted back on the airplane.

Tail numbers are an accounting system used to track the actual history and life cycle costs of each individual airplane. This includes actual flying hours, cycles, maintenance, modifications, problems, and scheduled and unscheduled PDM. When an airplane is transferred from one unit to another, all of its records goes with it to the gaining unit.

I still believe the tail number is 57-1456 on this KC-135R.

I'm gonna have to disagree with KC and Haveblue.

57-1486 in 2006 (same year as photos) with AZ fin flash:

57-1456 from 2004 and 2007. By 07 it was based up in Michigan at Selfridge.

I think the original pic is too wonky to make out the number correctly, but since 71456 never had the arizona fin flash, it can be definitively ruled out.

OK, the list I looked at showed it as "canx". But that fits, and it clearly isn't 57-1466 despite it looking very much like it.

They certainly look it, which just adds to the confusion!

Try this list. KC-135A, 57-1466, assigned to Carswell AFB, TX crashed one nm short of Rwy 35 to Carswell, on what is now SH-183 in Fort Worth, on 6 March 1960. It hit a building and some power lines. If it were landing to the south, on Rwy 17, it would have crashed into Lake Worth.

It is 1466, not 86 or 56. Damn clear as day to me.

Yes, most logical thing. An airframe written off 50 years ago instead of one that actually served in the AZ ANG at that time, based off a super blurry pic.

I don't buy it.

Has to be a poor pic (no offence to the thread starter, it's the best you could come up with) of 57-1486
