Historic Photos Taken On Iwo Jima, During WW 2

Mon Feb 14, 2011 11:55 pm

Anyone having an interest in military aviation history, the enclosed link is to a website with 150 photographs that were taken on Iwo Jima during WW 2. Most are of P-51 Mustangs, B-29 Superforts, a few of P-61 Blackwidows, and a lot are of the officers and men who flew the planes and worked on them. Many are very hard to look at. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did.

Great photos, thanks for sharing. Interesting how there seemed to be a lot of accidents where crippled B-29s would run into parked P-51s.

Iwo was an emergency landing site for B-29s that could not make it back to home base - so a lot of B-29 wrecks there. Also it appears to me that many of the photos of B-29s crashing into P-51s were of the same accident.

Amazing pictures, thanks for sharing! Its well documented seeing B-17's return war torn and crash landing, but never have seen any such photos/stories of the B-29 like that so it was eye opening for sure.

awesome photos ... thank you very much for sharing!

What struck me was how many planes were landed on top of when a B-29 (or whatever) landed with damage. You would think they would have moved the flight line back some ... or maybe there was not enough room?

I will never forget that these men stood on the wall and protected us, so that today my family and I can sleep safely. They are my heroes ... all of them. Greatest generation indeed!

Maybe a little off topic, but I think this two links could be of interest for those who actually read this topic.

Both are related with Shemya, Alaska, a little known, forgotten and frozen airstrip that play a big role in the national security of U.S. and Canada for decades.
