Five C-17 Globemasters At SFO Today

Sat Feb 19, 2011 3:25 am

Yesterday, I only observed one C-17 Globemaster & one C-5 Galaxy that brought the President's choppers, limo, etc. for his meeting with the tech leaders.

Can someone explain why there were five C-17 Globemaster planes at SFO today? Was one cargoplane used to transport each of the 5 helicopters used by the President and company?

Thanks

All I know is it made one mess of flights. Got a 3hr delay today because of the ground shutdown from Toronto - San Fransisco to LAX.

One C-17 each for the Presidental Blackhawks, the C-5 brings in The Beast (I believe there are 2 of them). In this case there was more cars brought in since he flew via Helo to the woodside area.

The other Helo's, the Chinook's, flew out on their own I believe. Those are to big to fit into a C-17.

I observed four choppers flying over my house near SQL, and three of them were CH-47s. The fourth was the presidential Black Hawk. I don't think CH-47s can fit in a C-17.

Related to this no doubt:

You'd think it'd make more sense to use Moffett Field or SJC...

With the delays it caused on top of the ATC delays, everyone here in the UAL SOC would prefer Moffet.

for his meeting with the tech leaders.

Was a video conference with too hard for them to set-up?

Wasn't SFO shutdown once to allow Clinton to come in for a haircut? Geez, they seem to get the raw deal...

You can get a chinook into a C-17

We do it all the time in the RAF

Maybe the RAF are better at Tetris and lego?

Wonder how the presidential visit will impact on London airports in May. Will AF1 go to LHR?

I don't think CH-47s

If you guys are referring to HMX-1 they are CH-46E "Sea Knights" they are USMC aircraft Not Army aircraft. CH-46's are a bit smaller than CH-47's.

I'm not sure if they take the VH-3D's on the road or not, I think they use the VH-60 "whitehawks" on the road.

"Because the VH-60N folds easily for loading into an Air Force C-5 Galaxy or a C-17 Globemaster III it is ideal for overseas assignments. The Marines can prepare a VH-60N for a C-5 load in less than two hours."

Son of gun, didn't know that. That C-17 is bigger then I thought. With all the Prez visits I have always seen the Chinooks fly in, so I assumed they couldn't fit.

Quoting hercppmx (Reply 10):

Yeah 2 were the HMX-1, then 4 gray birds.
