Well, this is a very complex thing,he proposals investments for the NG gripen to the SWAF wort approx 9 to 10 Billion Dollars, not saying how many planes that is needed, should be about 80 - 100 and the politicians are not on the same page here at the moment, some suggest that if we not succeed to sell the NG to another country we should probably look abroad to purchase a new fighter.
For sure is that the C/D,s has reach is lifetime in 2020-2025. would be a bit ironic if we in 5 to 10 years from no ordered 80 to 100 F-35

The JAS NG would be at the approx 5 billion € dicussed for 100 planeds a very cheap extension of an efficient weapon system that one already has. All the international competitions show that the price/performance of Gripen is unsurpassed at the moment, it is rated directly after Thyphoon and Rafale in India at 50-60% of their lifecycle cost and is in reality rated no 1 by Brazil. It is a lot of bang for the buck.

The only area that would need real looking into on top of the present NG specification is a furhter reduction of it's signatures. This can be achieved with evolutionary means like better coating of joints on the wings, redesigned outer skins on hatches and pylons (with chevron patterns in the straigt forward direction) and conformal pod carrying of extra fuel and air to air weapons.
