What Ever Happen To The A-330 Desitined For KC-X?

Tue Mar 08, 2011 6:32 pm

Does anyone know what Airbus did with the first A-330 built as a prototype for the second KC-X fiasco, er, competition?
It was equipped with GE powerplants, but never "militarized" if I'm not mistaken.

Hmmm, perhaps the same thing as the 2002-era KC-767? That is, collecting dust?

AdA already flies A330, they could need another one if it is cheap to get.

The last I heard (back in 2008) was both airplanes were in storage without engines. But, I'll bet they have been delivered to airlines somewhere by now. There is still a law suit between Airbus, NG, and the USAF over payment for them, even though both were produced after the USAF 'stop work' order was issued to NG.

I thought they built one, that actually was in flight, before the "stop work" order was issued?

The A330 demonstrator for the KC-X competition is currently in storage in Toulouse I believe.

It has been deemed not suitable in terms of configuration for airline use, however it is on the list for a VIP/Corporate Jet conversion.

May even have been sold already, don't know...
As far as I am aware, although 2 aircraft may have been used, only 1 was really a dedicated airframe, and that's the one waiting to become a seriously nice 2nd/3rd/4th home to someone...

I doubt Boeing could sell this airplane as a KC-46 as it is not a freighter version. They could use it for some initial flight testing, but not include it as an SDD tanker.

What is EADS going to do with this airplane? It still has the L-2 door where the cargo door was going to be placed. Perhaps they can recycle it to the RAAF as a KC-30, or to the RAF as an A-330MRTT?

Does it have to be a tanker? Can it be converted to a civilian A330?

As mentioned... destined for VIP conversion.

Why don't they sell the A330 as a private tanker? Want to take your VIP A340/767 or other airplane non stop from LHR to australia but can't. Now you can with your very own Shell fill up station in the sky!

Seriously, I can remember seeing some pictures of tankers owned by a private company which rents them out to air forces around the world I guess. Maybe they can use it.
